An experienced defensive lineman hopes to make the leap from key reserve to starter in 2013.

Today's featured player is a returning defensive linesman that could have a big impact this season. With Kawann Short off to the NFL Bruce Gaston needs a partner in the middle of the defensive line. Ryan Isaac could be that guy.

Ryan Isaac - Sr.

Michigan City, Indiana (Michigan City HS)

6'5", 294 pounds

Defensive Tackle

2013 Projection: Starter at defensive tackle.

Isaac enters his fourth season with the Boilermakers as a regular contributor. He stepped onto campus in the fall of 2010 and immediately played despite being only a true freshman. He didn't see much action early on, but after the rash of injuries hit Purdue he got on the field for the final five games as a reserve. He finished with seven tackles and a sack, including three stops in his first collegiate game at Illinois.

As a sophomore in 2011 Isaac played a little more, getting into eight games and making nine tackles. One tackle was for loss in the game against Minnesota where he had a career high four tackles.

The 2012 season was the first in which Isaac played extensively, getting into 12 of 13 games as a reserve. This gave him a career high 14 tackles at a position where a large number of tackles don't regularly happen. He also had two pass break-ups and two passes defensed.

The goal for Isaac this year is simple: he needs to be a disruptive force in the middle that is solid against the run and able to get to the quarterback. Short is gone and he will be given every opportunity to start in his place. There is plenty of competition at the position with guys like Brandon Taylor sharing an almost equal amount of experience, but Isaac will be a valuable rotation player at the very least that will help the D-line from wearing down.

Interesting to see that former M.C. Wolf basketball star Phil Taylor is listed on the Purdue Boilermakers football roster.

Did he ever play any football at MCHS? Maybe he just looks the part of a DB for Coach Hazell. Good luck to him he must be a pretty good student to get into Purdue and be on the football team.

I wonder if there is other "basketball" talent walking the halls of MC that could help out the current football team. Imagine Keenan Simmons and Lucas Daurer as wideouts. Merrillville used Brian Jenkins in both sports, the Wolves never quite figured out a spot for him.

Taylor was a mainstay in the secondary for MCHS during his last two years here.

Lots of parents members of the basketball team won't let their sons play football in the fall because they don't want them playing a full contact sport.

If this is true it is a shame! Not just for the football program but for the child as well as any other athletic program that they may want to try. They may just open other doors that they didn't know existed as opposed to limiting the ones that are only in front of them. We all hear the stories of parents not involved enough with todays children and then sometimes parents are too involved and don't let kids be kids and explore all the options availible to them at a young age that they won't get a chance to experience again. If I had kids going throught the system again, i would tell them to do everything and try everything that is out there from clubs to athletic teams because you will not get this opportunity again. Developing well rounded members of our community would be a good thing and learning how to network with others in different groups and settings can only help in the long run.
