MICHIGAN CITY — This fall, Brown Mackie College will move from its present location at 325 E. U.S. 20 to a building three times its size at 1001 E. U.S. 20, the site of a former furniture store across from Naturally Wood.

“We’ve outgrown this space,” Brown Mackie College Campus President Sheryl Elston said. “We want to give students a better facility with better parking.

The new place is ideal to give them the best learning environment they can have.”

Elston said the college anticipates the move to occur late this fall.

“This way, we will have everyone under one roof,” she said.

One reason for the move is to accommodate the growing student population. When Commonwealth College became Brown Mackie in 2003, Elston said the student population was around 300.

This year, more than 450 students attend the Michigan City site.

“So far, the students I have talked to seem very excited about it,” Elston said, adding that students were notified about the move by letter about a week ago.

Senior Director of Admissions Nancy Spenny also looks forward to relocating.

“It is a bigger facility and a lot nicer,” she said. “This will give us more lab space: a good thing for everybody.”

The lease for the current Brown Mackie campus will not be renewed once the move takes place. But the college will continue its partnership with Michiana Humane Society, with veterinary technician classes still scheduled to be held there.

Spenny said the veterinary technician field is one of the most popular for students at the school. Other fields in which the school offers associate and bachelor programs include medical assisting, business, criminal justice, surgical technology and accounting.

Brown Mackie College has five Indiana sites, offering students the convenience of taking one class a month encompassing 12 hours.

“That gives them time to focus as we prepare them to work locally,” Spenny said. “Our goal is to educate and train our students so they can find a job shortly after graduation.”

The new location formerly housed Furniture Bargains and before that Eagle grocery store.

MICHIGAN CITY — On Valentine’s Day, the staff at Brown Mackie College will have a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the school’s new location at 1001 E. U.S. 20.

Earlier, Brown Mackie Michigan City Campus President Sheryl Elston told The News-Dispatch, “We’ve outgrown (the space at 325 E. U.S. 20).”

The new space, a former furniture store, which shares a parking lot with Allegius Credit Union at U.S. 20 and Woodland Avenue, gives Brown Mackie three times the space.

Plus, Elston said, “We want to give students a better facility with better parking.”

In 2003, the former Commonwealth Business College became Brown Mackie College.

At the Michigan City campus, Brown Mackie offers courses in nursing and health, business and technology, legal studies and veterinary technology.

Brown Mackie also has campuses in South Bend, Merrillville and Indianapolis and Fort Wayne in Indiana and in about two dozen other locations around the country, from Oklahoma to Alabama, Iowa, Idaho, Kentucky and more.

Brown Mackie College will have a grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Feb. 14 at the new location, 1001 E. U.S. 20.

In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will move to Feb. 16. Those who plan to attend are asked to call Ann Fraze at 877-3100 by Jan. 27.
