Groups team up for cleanup of Michigan City beaches, waters

Environmental and business groups will team up Saturday up to clean the beaches and waterways near the NIPSCO Michigan City generating station.

NIPSCO's Environmental Action Team, Northwest Indiana Paddling Association, Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Michigan City Parks Department, Michigan City Chamber of Commerce, Save the Dunes and Northwest Steelheaders will work from 9 a.m. to noon near the generating station at Wabash Avenue and Water Street.

The work was prompted by a recent survey of the shoreline along Trail Creek and Lake Michigan that found debris in need of removal.

Those interested in helping can register at the Alliance for the Great Lakes website at www.greatlakesadopt.org. Volunteers will gather at the Washington Park Beach beginning at 8:30 a.m.
