I heard a rumor that Applebee's in MC is closing this week. This would be a sad state of affairs for the mall if the rumor is true.

I heard a couple years ago they were going to close the store in the mall and construct a new standalone restaurant somewhere along the Franklin St. Strip. I figured they were waiting for their lease to run out at the mall.

Sounds like they are completely closing, at least for now.

They just need to raze that Mall and totally redevelop that whole area. The mall is a blight and bad luck for anyone who tries to stay there. They could wall up the mall entrances of the anchor stores, let them be stand alone stores, tear down the rest of the mall building, and put something else there: stores, a venue hall, a park, anything but that dilapidated, falling down, ugly thing that's there now.

This begs the question of how many national chain type, sit down and order off the menu restaurants can Michigan City support?

Many moons ago when I was in the Navy, I crossed paths with a man who had been to Michigan City. He called it "The Town of 1000 Restaurants".

I read somewhere that Michigan City once had 300 bars and taverns.

Michigan City, I believe, has filled it's available quota of liquor licenses. I seem to remember that when the Olive Garden was trying to first build here, they had to buy an existing liquor license from one of the neighborhood bars on Ohio Street to allow them to construct a bar area.

Olive Garden bought the liquor license from the former Cedar Tap by Ames Field. The Cedar Tap property is now an eye doctors office.

They left the label scar on Applebee's. On the building facade you can still see where it read's Neighborhood Bar & Grill and they also turned the Marquette Mall Marquee sign around but you can easily see through it and read Applebee's inside out.
