MICHIGAN CITY | An interim principal has been named at Michigan City High School to replace a man who resigned after alleged holding inappropriate cellphone communication with a now former student.

Kevin Goralczyk was chosen Tuesday night by the Michigan City Area Schools board.

School Board member Beryle Burgwald said Goralczyk should be ready to assume the duties because of his previous experience as assistant principal.

“Obviously, you have to have administrative abilities. You don't want some principal being tutored on the job,” said Burgwald.

Lee Dabagia Jr. resigned last month several weeks after being placed on paid leave. Details of the separate internal and police investigations have not been disclosed.

However, Burgwald said he and a second board member voted to terminate Dabagia based on the findings of the internal probe.

A majority of the board chose to accept his resignation.

Burgwald said he expects a permanent replacement to be hired prior to the start of the fall semester.

The position is actually for a School Psychologist. It's great that the school is seeking a specialized professional to help our kids through some the tough times in their young lives and in turn help them better achieve in the classroom.

I often have people tell me and have read in the past that Michigan City schools suffers from having an "idenity crisis". Perhaps this person can address this issue which we can in turn we can finally overcome.
