Over the last weekend of 2015, officers with the Michigan City Police Department were alerted to Facebook messages about a dog that was being treated for severe injuries.

The dog was found with marks indicating that its muzzle had been taped shut. There were also injuries to the dog's legs.

On Monday, December 28, the case was officially assigned to Det. Jillian Ashley, who immediately started to work the case and spent many hours talking with witnesses and gathering evidence.

Probable cause was found and an arrest warrant was issued for Richard Cope. He is charged with:

1. Torturing or mutilating a vertebrate animal -- Level 6 felony
2. Cruelty to animals -- Class A misdemeanor
3. Animal Neglect/Abandonment -- Class A misdemeanor x 2

As of Monday afternoon, the Michigan City Police Department is asking for assistance from the public in locating Cope.

Anyone with information on his location is asked to call the Michigan City Police Department at 219-874-3221.

MICHIGAN CITY — A Michigan City man has pleaded guilty in connection with a puppy discovered badly injured when he limped to a neighbor's yard on Christmas Day 2015.

Richard Cope, 51, is scheduled for sentencing Jan. 27 in LaPorte Superior Court 4 after Judge Greta Friedman on Friday took his plea under advisement.

If accepted, Cope will be convicted of intimidation, a Level 6 felony; torturing or mutilating an animal, a Level 6 felony; and animal neglect or abandonment, a class A misdemeanor

In exchange, he agreed to serve no more than a 30-month sentence.

It's alleged that Cope broke the pit bull's hips, along with other injuries, and taped his nose shut prior to the dog being discovered next door last Christmas.

I just saw this. This guy is living garbage. I hope he goes bye bye for a long time, and finds love in prison. It may take some getting used to but he'd still be getting off light.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. (WLS) --
A northwest Indiana man who duct-taped a pit bull puppy's mouth shut was sentenced to 48 months in prison.

The puppy was found injured on Christmas Day 2015 in Michigan City, Indiana. The terrier pit bull mix was found wheezing, foaming at the mouth and stumbling. He had scars from duct tape being wrapped around his muzzle and a pair of broken hips.

Richard Cope pleaded guilty to also breaking the puppy's hips.

Cope spent several weeks on the run before he was arrested in El Paso, Texas.

The dog has since recovered.

A theft suspect who threatened a Meijer employee with a knife has been captured, police said.

At 3:58 p.m. Jan. 12, an employee called 911 for a customer creating a disturbance at Meijer at 5150 Franklin St., said Michigan City police Lt. Kevin Urbanczyk.

The customer had left the store before police arrived and an officer went inside to investigate. Witnesses told police the customer left the store without paying for all of his merchandise and was pursued by a loss-prevention employee.

The employee approached the customer about not paying for all of the items and the customer allegedly displayed a knife. He then threatened to use the knife on her, police reported.

Michigan City Detective Arwen LaMotte identified the customer as Richard Cope, 55, of Michigan City.
