Blueberry picking is in full swing at Stateline Blueberries in Michigan City, IN, just a quick hour or so drive from Chicago. The blueberries are big and sweet and juicy. The farm sells u-pick for $1.50 per pound. They sell boxes to transport the fresh blueberries in and there are recipes on the box. Make sure to call ahead to the farm to check on picking conditions.

They have a great old fashioned blueberry muffin recipe that calls for sour cream as one of the ingredients. Rinse off the blueberries, coat them in a little sugar and add more blueberries than the recipe calls for when mixed in. Adding mini semi-sweet chocolate chips to the batter and on top of each muffin adds a special touch and taste to the muffins.

No need to worry about picking too many blueberries because they make a great gift for family, friends, and neighbors and they can be frozen in baggies until they are ready to be eaten.

No one ever said comfort food couldn't be healthy. Blueberries are full of antioxidants and promote many health benefits including anti-aging benefits, urinary tract health, and they have lots of vitamins too. Just eating one cup a day can reap some benefits. There is nothing better than fresh picked blueberries.

To make a day of it, pick blueberries in the morning and let the kids help then travel approximately 7 miles to New Buffalo, MI Beach for a lovely afternoon. Parking at the beach is $10 or less and there is no admission fee.

We were there two weeks ago. Of the probably 25 cars, ours was the only one not from Illinois. The owner mentioned how nice it was to see someone from Indiana. The kids love it and together we picked some ungodly amount of blueberries. Blueberry-banana smoothie time!

Frieda and I took the kids today. The patch is huge, the staff is kind and friendly (even chatted with the owner). I am not a blueberry "person" however, fresh berries right from the bush do taste good.

Frieda and the kids are baking. Although it's going to take them some time to go through all 12.5 lbs of berries. We are gonna give some to my mom and grandmother and freeze some for later use.

They have boxes available for a very reasonable charge. The 5# box is $.50 and the 10# box is $.75. All our berries comfortable fit in the 10# box.

Even in the rain the kids had a great time. This is definitely a family friendly and fun activity.

The kids even gave their portable facilities a two thumbs up. Our oldest Jordan said "Dad, they even had a sink, soap, paper towel, the works".

Enjoy a day of blueberry picking with the family at Stateline Blueberries

A family tradition of ours for several years has been to go blueberry picking. Of all the picking excursions we’ve gone on, blueberries seem to be the perfect picking item. On big bushes with berries at the right height for toddlers through adults, it’s not a far stretch or low bend for anyone. And then there’s the pleasure of eating the fresh berries just after they’ve been picked and the health benefits that the super food provides.

Stateline Blueberries in Michigan City is a great spot to go for blueberry picking. The farm has been there for decades, but has been run by the Ott family for the past decade. The 35-acre farm offers 10 varieties of blueberries.

Be sure to plan your visit soon before the crop is gone. A phone call to the farm this morning indicated they are still open and will continue through the end of August. When pre-picked berries are available, they are $2.75 per pound. However, much of the fun of a visit is picking your own. If you do the work, it’s only $1.50 per pound.

According to the annual newsletter I received from the family, the Ott kids are running a lemonade stand this year to raise money for Riley’s Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis.
Hours are 8:00 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. – 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (central time.)

Eat blueberries frozen. They are a delicious treat on a hot summer day!

Frozen grapes are pretty good as well--and they won't turn your fingers blue like the blueberries do.

Better than ice cream IMO
