Parade Grand Marshal Announced

Michigan City Mayor Chuck Oberlie made the following announcement with respect to the Summer Festival Parade scheduled for Sunday, July 5th:

“I am pleased to announce today that the 2009 Summer Festival Parade Grand Marshal will be Mike Pease, Chairman of the Drum & Bugle Corps Events that are at the heart of our annual Summer Festival series of events. Mike first became Chairman of the Drum & Bugle Corps Show in 1998 and he has served in exemplary fashion in that capacity for twelve years.

Mike and his wife Robin have traveled to many places across the United States and Canada to witness Drum & Bugle Corps perform. We are fortunate to have his expertise here in Michigan City to manage all of the logistics needed to create the pageantry of our annual Drum & Bugle Corps Show. He has been rewarded for his effort by receiving the Drum Corp International Show of the Year Award in both 1999 and 2006.

Mike has also been successful in arranging for visiting Drum Corps to participate in the Summer Festival Parade. Most notably for this year, eight of the nine Drum Corps that are coming to Michigan City are expected to march in the parade.
Drum Corps that visit Michigan City every summer help bring tens of thousands of dollars into our local Michigan City economy. But, more importantly for parents around the world, they know that their kids will be safe and in the good hands of Mike Pease during their stay in Michigan City.

We applaud Mike for his dedication to youth around the world and his dedication to helping Michigan City. And we are honored to help Mike complete his journey from marching as a baritone bugler with the Maple City Cadets of LaPorte from 1969 through 1971 to now leading the parade as our Grand Marshal.”

I'd punch a baby in the throat to be there. Such a great MC tradition - I remember watching as a litle kid in the late 50's/early 60's - as well as marching the parade every summer with The Maple City Cadets. Someone take/post pics please!

Summer Festival Parade Line-up Announced
175 units registered
MICHIGAN CITY - The Summer Festival Parade begins at 1 p.m. Sunday at Franklin and 10th streets and continues down Franklin Street to Ames Field.

Eight drum and bugle corps groups will appear in the parade this year, and all will be performing in the Pageant of Drums drum and bugle corps show at 6 p.m. at Ames Field.

New this year are units from the Culver Military Academy units.

In addition, Miss New Buffalo and the 2009 Blossomtime Festival Royalty Float from Benton Harbor, Mich., will be riding in the parade.

Another highlight of the parade is the Norfolk Southern's "Train Your Brain" railroad crossing safety awareness mascot, Brainy. Brainy will remind people to "Train Your Brain" to be smart at railroad crossings. Also new this year, Andy Linder, world footbag (Hacky Sack) champion will be performing his stunts down the parade route.

The grand marshal of the parade will be Mike Pease, chairman of Drum Corps International, and parade marshal will be Courtney Brinckman, 2009 Graduate with Distinction of Michigan City High School.

Miss Ind. to be in parade
Pollard will be joined by Outstanding Teen winner

MICHIGAN CITY - The newly crowned Miss Indiana will be in Sunday's Summer Festival Parade.

Nicole Pollard, who competed in Michigan City to win the Miss Duneland title Dec. 14, was crowned Miss Indiana on Saturday in Zionsville. She will compete for the title of Miss America in Las Vegas on Jan. 30. She is from Lafayette, Ind., and is an Indiana University graduate

This was the second year in a row Miss Duneland won the Miss Indiana title. Katie Stam, Miss Duneland 2008, became Miss Indiana 2008 and Miss America 2009, the first Miss Indiana to win the Miss America title. Stam was at the pageant Saturday to crown Pollard.

Also in the Summer Festival Parade will be Miss Indiana's Outstanding Teen, Lydia Daley, Auburn, Ind., who also won her title Saturday She was Miss Duneland's Outstanding Teen in 2008.

This year's Miss Duneland's Outstanding Teen, Terrin Thomas, was second runner-up in the state contest in Zionsville.

Pollard and Daley will ride on The News-Dispatch float in the parade, which starts at 1 p.m. Sunday and travels Franklin Street from 10th Street to Ames Field.

I totally agree with you - CBTL should be represented by a float in every parade we have (St Patrick's Day too...after all I am a Sheila and we have (Shannon) Very Irish Me aboard too LOL). I will be happy to work on putting it together with you all if someone has a truck to haul it and us behind them.

That's exactly right. The parade is a life-long memory - starting in the late 50's watching it - then marching in it every year with the Maple City Cadets. The 4th is a hard time not to be there - so your great pix staved off the tears!

We could all have matching shirts and make a banner including the website address and walk OR

we could decorate a pickup truck and ride in it (maybe by next year we will have one - my husband has been eyeing some older ones) OR if anyone has a flat trailer or even a small hauling trailer we could fix it up to represent some of our views on CBTL and walk along with it.


Or we could decorate Love this City's boat


I have a million ideas and I would suspect Ang does also!
