QUOTE Ex-councilwoman seeks auditor post By Deborah Sederberg Staff Writer Published: Wednesday, February 8, 2012 5:07 PM CST MICHIGAN CITY — A former Democratic Michigan City Common Councilwoman has announced her candidacy for La Porte County auditor. Joie Winski, who served two terms as Fourth Ward council member, filed Friday, Feb. 3, to seek the Democratic nomination for auditor. “The office must function smoothly for county government to deliver necessary services, and I will push to return common sense and efficiency to the office,” she said in a press release. “The time has long passed to elect a person who not only understands problems, but is willing to work with everyone to find fair and equitable solutions to those problems.” * Communication skills are essential for the post because the auditor’s office works closely with nearly every other county office, Winski noted. “I have an understanding of the office and can and will work with everyone to make sure this office is run smoothly, efficiently and professionally,” she said. Winski, who has been active in public service for nearly 30 years, now serves as president of the Property Assessment Tax Board of Appeals. She also is a member of the Michigan City Economic Development Commission board of directors and a Michigan City Redevelopment Commission member. She holds a Level II assessor’s certification in Indiana and is a certified tax representative. She worked for the Michigan Township Assessor’s office for eight years. Winski said local residents and elected officials who “want stability and accountability back in the auditor’s office” have encouraged her to run. “I look forward to a positive campaign based on knowledge and issues related to the auditor’s office,” Winski said. |
