Youth relay canceled

LA PORTE - The Board of Directors of the organization Support Our Youth is canceling its 17th annual Dusk to Dawn Relay this spring.

In a message to students, parents and community supporters, the board said, "It is with sincere regret and great disappointment it couldn't hold the event." It went on, "We simply did not have enough adult volunteers this year to plan and execute this wonderful event for the youth of our community."

The statement continued, "But do not be discouraged, for we have already scheduled the relay at Kiwanis Field for May 21, 2010."

The organization will continue to examine ways to assure there will be an event in 2010.

The organization is asking for help in this effort.

Support Our Youth will still award four scholarships to high school seniors this spring, but there will be no grant funds to help address their mission to prevent alcohol and other drug use for youth in 2009.
