MICHIGAN CITY — A Michigan City man, who was arrested Saturday by Michigan City police, used his shirt to hang himself in a holding cell at the police department late Saturday and died at Franciscan St. Anthony Health – Michigan City Sunday afternoon.

Police are withholding the man’s name until his family can be notified of his death.

La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan said the man died at 12:59 p.m. Sunday at the Michigan City hospital. The cause of death was determined to be asphyxiation due to hanging and the manner of death was listed as suicide, Sullivan said.

According to a Michigan City Police Department report, the man was arrested at about 8:40 p.m. Saturday after police were called to the 3100 block of Springland Avenue in reference to a domestic dispute.

The initial 911 call indicated the call was an open line and dispatchers could hear yelling and a physical altercation in progress in the background. When officers arrived, the accused male subject had left the apartment but was believed to still be at the apartment complex.

Detective Corp. Anthony McClintock observed the male suspect approach another male outside of an apartment and officers took the suspect into custody. He was arrested on charges of resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct, possession of marijuana and public intoxication.

After being booked at the police department, the suspect was placed into a holding cell at about 9:40 p.m. Saturday, according to the police report. A check of those in the holding cells was conducted at about 10:20 p.m. when another suspect was placed in the holding cells.

At about 10:35 p.m., while beginning duties of the desk/jailer, Officer Kenneth Eguia conducted a cell check at shift change, when he discovered the Springland Avenue suspect suspended by his own shirt from the front bar of the holding cell.

Officers immediately called an ambulance and McClintock began performing CPR with the assistance of Officer Steven Forker and Sgt. Darren Kaplan. The suspect was taken to the hospital and was treated in the intensive care unit there before his death Sunday afternoon, according to police.
