Stimley seeking city clerk post

By Jason Miller, The News-Dispatch

Tavern owner Johnny Stimley announced Monday he will seek the Michigan City clerk post in the May primary.

Stimley pointed to his many years of community service as qualifications, touting the fact he resurrected the All-American Soap Box Derby in Michigan City and his involvement in several other charity events, including the annual Halloween Bed Race.

Stimley, who co-owns Ryan's Irish Pub and Town & Country Bar with his father, John Stimley Sr., said he's concerned about the community's youth and realizes “they are the key to the success of Michigan City's future.”

Current Michigan City Clerk Thomas Fedder said Monday he plans to announce his intentions for the upcoming election soon, but didn't say if he plans to run or retire.

Stimley, a marathon runner, said he works with Washington Park Zoo officials on its annual Running Wild for the Zoo event, partners with Michigan City Family YMCA for the annual bike run and founded the city's annual St. Patrick's Day Parade.

He also coaches youth boxers at Double D's Boxing.

“I think I could do a lot for the city with all my qualifications,” he said. “I'll try to enhance the city. It's time for a change, and I believe I will make a difference in the city.”
