Here are the only laws that the State of Indiana has on selling and buying scrap material. There are a bunch of problems the first being that they aren't enforced at all. I think the state should adopt the laws which St. Joe county has put in place. I'll try to put a set of those up here as well. Can you guys find the first and biggest loophole?

The first one I really noticed was in Chapter 1 Section 1c.

That's right. 1000 dollars of "scrap" is 1000 dollars of "scrap." Who cares what kind of metal or alloy it is? A lot of funeral urns are bronze. Southbend has very good and tight rules. Scrap dealers aren't allowed to take in funeral urns at all for example.
I've caught multiple people stealing scrap from all walks of life. None of the yards ever have that info on file. At best I had one that said RED DODGE, 4,500 lbs. |

So, howsabout enforcing the existing rules? More unenforced rules are not going to make any difference.

So, howsabout enforcing the existing rules? More unenforced rules are not going to make any difference. The law would need to be amended and then enforced. If you go to any given scrap yard the VAST majority of material isn't covered under this law. I'm guessing 90% or more. |

Unless you're police, they don't have to show anyone anything.

That is, Section 2 paragraph b. It's not. I caught a guy red handed in Westville about a year ago. I had them go through the paper work and they didn't have much if anything and the stuff wasn't recorded. It'd just say "Red Dodge" then the weight would be at the bottom. |
