The old Morrisons has been closed now for a few years. The owner of Harmony Bar had purchased it and made an attempt for a couple years, but with never advertising the business it never came back and has been closed since.

I had no idea it had closed. That's a bit sad. I always remember Morrison's being a worth sub for Carlson's - plus they had great mozzerella Sticks AND cheese cubes. Gotta love calories breaded AND deep fried!

QUOTE
Carlson's owner celebrates birthday at the place he loves best: work

Joseph Malan
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - Rather than spend his 60th birthday away from work and with friends, John Hermann stayed at Carlson's Drive-In to do what he loves best: work with his employees and serve glasses of cold root beer to customers.

As it turned out, many of Hermann's friends came to Carlson's, 118 W. Coolspring Ave., on Monday to wish him happy birthday and enjoy one of those glasses of trademark root beer.

In celebration of his birthday, Hermann, the establishment's owner, gave a free mug of root beer to each customer who came by.

"We'll probably go through 3,000 root beers today," Hermann said.

That's about 400 to 500 gallons of the drink.

Carlson's root beer is made differently than what's typically found at restaurant food chains. Most chains will take carbonated water, then add the root-beer syrup. Hermann, however, brews the syrup first, then carbonates the mixture. That helps the drink maintain its sweetness, and keeps customers like Richard Clark coming back every week.

In Clark's case, a few times every week - ever since he moved to Michigan City when he was 6.

"It's a little sweeter," Clark, 51, said of the root beer as he sipped on a glass early Monday outside Carlson's.

But it's not just the beverages that keep him coming back.

"The food (keeps me coming back), the service is excellent and the gals are great," he said.

Clark was around when the original owners, Bill and Fran Carlson, were serving hungry Michigan City patrons. He's also seen Marty Rebac take over the business in 1977 and hand it off to John and Lori Hermann in 2001.

"He's a nice person," Clark said of Hermann, who's known him since he took over Carlson's. "He's a friendly gentleman."

Even though Marty Rebac, 78, retired from ownership of the business, he's still helping Hermann quench Michigan City residents' thirst and satisfy their appetites.

And the secret root-beer recipe, Rebac said, hasn't changed one bit, even after two changes in ownership.

"The original owner said, 'If it's not broke, don't fix it'," Rebac said regarding the root beer.

So far, he and Hermann have stayed true to that policy.

That won't stop the traffic. Those of us who can't wait for it to open (yes, me...) will take n alternate route to the entrance on Wabash.
