QUOTE Police warn of scam artists Published: Tuesday, March 22, 2011 5:07 PM CDT MICHIGAN CITY — After reports of scam artists in Knox County, the Michigan City Police Department and Indiana Attorney General’s office are warning those whose property was damaged during recent severe weather to be weary of home-improvement scams. According to a department press release, people should be alert for solicitors who promise to speed up the insurance or building permit process and those who ask for large cash deposits or advance payments in full. The release recommends that people: • Ask for identification from someone claiming to be a federal employee, such as an inspector. • Know that Federal Emergency Management Agency representatives are never allowed to accept money, and inspectors never ask for Social Security, bank account or credit-card numbers. Report people claiming to represent the federal government who ask for money to the police. Remember their license plate numbers. • Be careful in choosing a contractor by taking steps such as checking with the Better Business Bureau or asking for references. Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind~Dr. Suess
