Salvation Army Seeks Holiday Volunteers

From Staff Reports

MICHIGAN CITY - The Michigan City Salvation Army is looking for volunteers to help ring bells, pack and deliver holiday baskets and assist with other holiday projects for the needy.

Maj. Brian Burkett said volunteer bell ringers are needed for many locations throughout the city, and anyone interested is asked to go to www.ringbells.org to sign up online. Call Burkett at 874-6885 if not having access to a computer.

The need is greater than ever, he said, and individuals, groups, clubs, churches and organizations may sign up for an entire day at one or more location, or for two-hour shifts.

The Salvation Army's Community Christmas chairman, Craig Dwight, CEO and president of Horizon Bank, has issued a challenge to local businesses to take an entire day and match the amount collected as Horizon Bank is doing at Jewel on Dec. 7 and 8.

Maj. Lee Ann Burkett also issued a reminder this week is the final week to apply for Christmas Food Baskets and Toys from The Salvation Army. She said those who would like to apply will need a picture identification card, Social Security cards for entire household, proof of residence, income and expenses. Toys are provided for children up to 12. Applications are being taken at The Salvation Army, 1201 Franklin St., in the lower level from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m. Seniors or people with disabilities who are confined to their home may call 874-6885.

In addition, she said The Salvation Army needs volunteers starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, to help sort food and pack Christmas baskets. Volunteers are asked to come to The Salvation Army, 1201 Franklin St. Please use the Green Street door.

Volunteers also are needed Tuesday, Dec. 18, to deliver baskets to the elderly and handicapped. Deliveries will begin at 10 a.m. and should be completed by noon. In addition, volunteers are needed Wednesday, Dec. 19, and Thursday, Dec. 20, to help with the distribution of Christmas food baskets and toys to needy families from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. Please call DeNita Ton at 874-6885.

The Salvation Army also seeks individuals, clubs, agencies, churches and groups to adopt a needy family for Christmas this year. Those who adopt a family are asked to provide a complete Christmas dinner and toys for the children or a dinner only.

Burkett said The Salvation Army expects to have 1,500 applicants by the end of the week. To avoid duplication, The Salvation Army also acts as a clearing house for others who are adopting families. Call The Army office at 874-6885 to see if the family you have adopted is on someone else's list.
