Registered voters = 20,000
Usual turnout = 20% Over/under = 3,750.5 citywide Tie breaker: Closest number to actual vote For example, I say Over, and my turnout number is 4, 001. Let's play! The difference between genius and stupidity is that there are limits to genius. Albert Einstein

4200 vote.
I think there will be a little more interest, but still not enough. Its sad but if you look at it, but under 10% of people in MC will actually vote for whoever wins. Think about it, if a race gets 4000 votes, and someone wins with a huge 60%, that means 2400 people voted for the winner, and 1600 for the loser. Keep in mind that is 2400 out of 32,900 total residents. You want to know why things don't change, its because we allow a small % of people to decide our direction. |

QUOTE Voter turnout averages about 20% By Laurie Wink, The News-Dispatch LaPORTE - The bright sunshine and balmy temperatures Tuesday in LaPorte County didn't provide any excuses for people not getting to the primary election polls - unless they decided to go to the beach instead. Of the total of 30,334 eligible registered voters, only 6,151 voted - slightly more than 20 percent. In Michigan City, about 21 percent of the city's registered voters actually voted in the mayoral contest, which was won by incumbent Chuck Oberlie. LaPorte's mayoral race drew less than 10 percent of registered voters, but nevertheless gave Kathy Chroback a resounding victory. Although local primary elections don't usually bring out voters like state and national elections, Tuesday's lackluster turnout of one in five voters may have set a record low for LaPorte County. In the 2003 Michigan City primary election, one in four voters - 25 percent - turned out to vote. The 1999 primary election drew 36 percent of Michigan City's voters. The three precincts in Michigan City with the highest percentage of voters turning out for the primary were 4-3 at Edgewood Elementary School, with 860 voters, or nearly 38 percent; 5-4 at Sinai Temple, with 913 voters, or nearly 36 percent; and 4-4 at Apostolic Lighthouse Church on Earl Road, with 981 voters, about 35 percent of those eligible. Two of those precincts gave incumbent city council member Pat Boy a commanding victory over challenger David Gring. The lowest turnout in Michigan City was in 6-2 at Niemann Elementary School where 209 of 1,206 registered voters - 17.35 percent - cast ballots. In LaPorte, voter turnouts were lower than in Michigan City, but only the mayoral race was a factor in the Maple City's primary election. The highest voter turnouts were in 5-4 at The Door Church, with 449 votes, or nearly 16 percent; 4-3 at LaPorte Civic Auditorium, with 714 votes, more than 15 percent; and 1-2 at the PRCU Club with 619 votes, a 13 percent turnout. The lowest voter turnout in LaPorte was at 2-1 at the Park Department office where just 44 of 605 registered voters - 7.27 percent - voted. Contact Laurie Wink at lwink@thenewsdispatch.com. |

That is pretty sad. I think the next election, whoever wants to be elected will get out everywhere and stress the importance of voting. Try to eliminate some of the apathy

What happened to the purged names? The registered voters numbered about 20,000, according to the ND a day ago. If 6,000 voted, then I get 30% of registered voters.
At any rate, still low. I am still in a little shock that if another hundred people came out, the 2nd Ward would have been different--and there are thousands there who did not vote. Apathy is the ally of the status quo. MC needs to be rid of it. |

Interesting stats:
In approximate terms (assuming war chest was spent): Oberlie: cost per vote - $24.00; Winski: cost per vote - $20.00; LaRocco: cost per vote - $5.00. |

That either means he didn't raise much money, or didn't get a lot of votes... Would you let it go already? Just start planning for 2001... A Space Odessey? |
