I just received word from Kim at the assessor's office and my appeal was handled in house and was reduced by $45,300 dollars. I'm pretty pleased with how she handled my appeal. Just wanted to share the joy!
Nothing is worth more than this day!

Just wanted to share the joy! Congrats!! Thanks for sharing that good news. It is nice to know that appeals can be successful. So please, Someone, where are we in the tax process - what is the last year for which they have actual taxes complete and accurate? We have been looking at homes and the taxes are all over the board - none of them seem to make a lot of sense. Some are marked provisional and some are not. One house listing will say it is $600 annually and the one next to it of similar character is $1800 annually. Check and see if their homestead exemption is included in their property taxes or not. That makes a big difference in the lower price ranges (say under $100k) |

...and check to see if the senior citizen's exemption is included. Thanks everyone. I pulled the assessor records online and see on one of them a $500 deduction, but no statement anywhere I can find of what it is for (type of exemption). I am so used to reading Marion County assessments and just have not yet caught onto the layout of these reports in LaPorte County. I should be ashamed....I have had a real estate license for over twenty years and can't figure out the LaPorte County assessment report. I had no clue I was so rutted into how everything works in Marion County and the 9 county Indy metro area. Which is exactly why we are using the help of a local agent. * "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." I was laughing at the absurdity of it all. Thanks for the link to the old thread on her testimony. The really sad thing is I could read that assessment card better than she......and I had never looked at a LaPorte County assessment report on a parcel until today. Of course so much of it is common sense and most of the terms are interchangeable with Marion County (where I could easily understand all of it after working there and reading those for 20 years). Going back to my issue (which I will also talk about with the local agent who is helping us), I can see very clearly there is not a homestead exemption on the property card I was viewing today, but there is a deduction without saying what exemption was used to allow that deduction. I don't think however I will call for any help from Carol McDaniels even if it won't cost me a penny....after all there is an old saying "You get what you pay for", although in the case of the current county assessor, maybe not even that. * "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
