QUOTE Major Work Planned On City's East Side Rick A. Richards Motorists on Michigan City's East Side will find the going difficult later this summer as major work is planned by both the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District and the city. NICTD, which operates the South Shore Railroad, told the Board of Works and Public Safety on Monday morning it will replace the rails on its commuter line between York and Spring streets. South Shore officials have told the city the work will be done from June 11 to 22, and that several intersections in the area, including Lafayette and Cedar streets, will be closed. At the same time, city officials said 11th Street between Franklin Street and Michigan Boulevard will be rebuilt, starting after the Summer Festival Parade, which is July 7. Once work starts (tentatively scheduled for July 9), it will take seven to 10 days to complete. Also Monday, the Board of Works gave James Spychalski two weeks to show progress on remodeling a home at 508 W. 11th St. The house, which has had the siding and windows removed, has been on the city's watch list since late 2005. Zoning Administrator Joe Siegel recommended the house be torn down, but because Spychalski didn't receive proper notification from the city, he was given a reprieve. Spychalski told the board he has been working at the house for the past two weeks, and replacement windows have been shipped and should be installed soon. Discussion followed on the house at 109 Combs St. owned by Mary Patterson. Because work there hasn't been done, the city awarded a contract to Phelps Construction, Westville, to demolish the house for $9,945. Building Inspector Russ Hatfield reported demolition of the home at 609 E. 10th St., owned by Joseph Tylisz, has been completed. In other business, the board: • Granted approval to close Grace Street from Michigan Boulevard to Holliday Street from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 16, for a Juneteenth Celebration organized by Councilman Willie Milsap. The rain date is June 23. • Granted approval to close the public street in Lakeland Estates for a community picnic Saturday, June 9. • Heard from James Shaw of the Village Green Neighborhood Association, who requested an entrance sign to the subdivision at Ohio Street and Essex Avenue. The request was turned over to the city Engineering Department. |

It would be nice if they could add a bike path to the marked lanes. Are the sidewalk areas gonna get fixed up, too?
