City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City Talk _ Future of Eastgate Plaza

Drove by the Eastgate Plaza this afternoon. The entire roof has been torn off the former Rent A Center store between the Family Dollar and the closed up beauty supply store.

I drove behind the plaza and the electrical system that services the abandoned grocery store looks like it could start a fire.

The parking lot is pathetic.

Eastgate plaza reminds me of the former Kmart and Zayre plaza on U.S. 20 in the Miller section of Gary.

The Beacon Site says the owners of the Eastgate Plaza are based out of Baltimore, MD

Yes this property needs to be leveled. It is a blight and the site isn't worth renovating in my opinion. It needs new construction.

The former K&M is now occupied by A&B auction and flea market.

There appears to be a new store opening soon in Eastgate Plaza called MC Supermarket a couple doors over from the old K&M. Don't know if it is going to be a grocery store or another Dollar discount store but they do have signage on both the marquee and over the storefront.

I saw a guy going in there working and asked if they are going to sell meat and produce and he said yes but he did not speak very good English. I believe the new store is going to be Hispanic operated. If it is a grocery store I wish them nothing but success because Eastport desperately need a place where the residents can buy fresh food for their family without having to traverse clear to the other side of the city. If they are completive with there prices I think the will do well.

MC Supermarket is now going out of business. The Eastgate Plaza is simply no longer a viable location for anybody to open up a grocery store.

There is another attempt going to be made for another grocery store. Blucker's Grocery Store, seems to have been incorporated for just this location. They are seeking grant money from the Urban Enterprise Zone Association, and possibly other funding. The listed "CEO" has listed a local address, but she does not appear to have ever been a resident. What will they do differently that will make it successful? It is probably just another boondoggle to get public money, short term.
