Around 60,000 families in Michiana will get an early Christmas gift from NIPSCO this year.

The natural gas and electric distribution company presented the Food Bank of Northern Indiana with a $7500 check on Wednesday.

The donation is part of NIPSCO employees’ charitable effort called “Pass the Heat,” and will allow the food bank to provide 60,000 meals to local families at a time the organization says is critical.

“That means more than just dollars. It means more than just those meals. It means an incredible holiday for so many families and so many people in our area,” said Milt Lee of the Food Bank of Northern Indiana.

Food bank employees say people who are able to meet their food needs through donations by organizations such as NIPSCO can then save up their money to buy holiday presents.

According to Angie Nelson of NIPSCO, “We live in these areas. We just want to be a great partner and a neighbor when we have those in need. It's just a good feeling.”

The food bank provides food for families in St. Joseph, Elkhart, Stark, LaPorte, Marshall and Kosciusko counties.
