Well with it officially being September on the calendar, it is time for summerlovers like myself to admit that the year is waning and start to look at some of the great things to do in the area as the leaves begin to change colors...
Apple Fest at Garwood Orchards is Sept 13 and 14th. http://www.garwoodorchard.com/events.html QUOTE Held yearly in mid-September, Garwood's Apple Fest has become a yearly event for many families. With great craft vendors, a watermelon throwing contest (proceeds benefit the LaPorte Small Animal Shelter) and our UPick farm fun with horse and tractor drawn wagon rides! Harvest Fest is Sept 20th and 21st at Bailey homestead http://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/events.htm QUOTE Duneland Harvest Festival Date: 9/20/2008, 9/21/2008 Time: 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM Location: Chellberg Farm Details: This is 2007`s press release. Some things change from year to year. The twang of a banjo, the wheeze of a steam thresher, and the toe-taping rhythm of clog dancing, are just a few of the sounds to be heard at this year`s Duneland Harvest Festival at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore`s Chellberg Farm. A friendly atmosphere and hands-on experiences bring many visitors back year after year to this 31-year old festival. The music, demonstrations, and even the food revolve around a harvest time theme at a 19th century farm. Visitors can try their hand at old-time crafts, take traditional hay rides and watch sheep-herding or shearing demonstrations, or just visit with volunteers in period dress to learn about the life back in "untamed" Indiana. Activities geared for kids include a "Children`s Corner" full of old-fashioned games. On stage features nearly non-stop performances of traditional music by local artists including, Save the Tunes Council, Banjo Bob, storytellers and Trois Canard. round out on-stage entertainment. Throughout the festival grounds, area artists and artisans will display their wares and demonstrate crafts and traditional activities. At the Chellberg Farm, visitors can experience crocheting, quilting, woodcarving, soap making, sorghum and cider pressing, and horse-drawn plowing. Food stands, operated by local non-profit groups, will be located throughout the festival grounds. Along with the standard fare, traditional foods will be featured, including two local favorites - Swedish potato sausage and roasted sweet corn. Pets are not permitted on festival grounds, with the exception of service animals. Fees: Free Contact: Cliff Goins 219-395-1864 Click here to email us for more information. More Information: Visit:http://www.nps.gov/indu/planyourvisit/dhf.htm The Westville Pumpkin fest is Oct 3- 5th, but even more fun is stopping by the farm on 421 just south of Westville (the name is escaping me right now) and picking out pumpkins and other great produce. They have tons of stuff for the kiddies as well. http://www.visitlaportecounty.com/listings...31¬ify=1 IF ANYONE ELSE HAS THINGS TO ADD FEEL FREE! |

So a person would partake in all three activities? Or could they pick?

We went out to Garwood this weekend, boy is it easy to spend tons of money out there! Between the fresh fruit, fresh veggies, and the fresh meat, you can go crazy in there. We are still going to try to go back next weekend to do the U-pick with the kiddies.

We actually made it out to Garwood during the couple hours of non-rain on Saturday and got our apple picking in with the kids. They had a blast.
Currently we are planning on making it to Harvest Fest on Saturday during the late morning. So far the weather looks about perfect. It ought to be fun. |

Slate reprinted a cynical but interesting commentary piece about self-pick orchards a week ago.

The eco-challenge got washed out in part on the 13th. I think the canoe/kayak part is going to be replayed in October.

Yeah, but when you have a hyper almost three year old, they are a God-send for getting her to nap well! |

The Eco-Fit Challenge was rained out for September 13th. The Kayak/Canoe part of this will be happening October 18th, with a plan to stop at International Friendship Gardens for lunch. Lisa

Westville's Pumpkin festival is this weekend! My favorite part of that isn't really the fest, but stopping by Coulter's to buy pumpkins and hay.

We made the trek out to Coulter Farm for the pumpkins, and by the looks of the trees it is time for the trip for a state park hike in the changing fall colors. It looks like we are right at peak leave time.

International Friendship Gardens, located on Route 12, about 1 1/2 miles east of Blue Chip Casino is having their Fall Fest this weekend, October 18 & 19th. Both days is from 12 noon till 4 PM. Come join IFG as they celebrate the seasons changing, enjoy mini- hayrides, garden tours and nature walks. Local vendors will be selling crafts and produce, musicians will be playing through out the day, the Native American garden will be having a demonstration at 2 PM each day, a Bake Sale will be going on well. Dogs on leashes are welcomed. If you know anyone interested in being a vendor, please pass this onto them, free to have a booth with a donation hoped for. Lisa
