Man registers .5 BAC

LA PORTE - La Porte Police chased a man and found he had a blood alcohol level more than six times the legal limit. The volume of alcohol that police say 35-year-old Brandon Clark consumed is disabling for most people, if not lethal.

According to police, officer Rodolfo Esparza about 4:30 a.m. Sunday observed a 2004 Chevy Blazer sitting at the railroad crossing at Washington and Tipton streets. After the train passed and the gates lifted, Esparza said, the SUV sat there for about 20 seconds. When the officer approached, the vehicle accelerated at high speeds.

Officer Esparza began following the La Porte man, who crossed Lincolnway stopping at Tipton Street and Jefferson Avenue. As the officer was getting out of his police vehicle, the SUV took off again. The suspect was in the 200 block of Maple Avenue when he slammed on his brakes and stopped a final time, police said.

He began yelling for officers to "shoot me," and during a profanity-laced tirade kept stating he was a "good guy," police said.

According to police, open bottles of rum and vodka were taken from the SUV.

Because of his level of intoxication, Clark was transported to La Porte Hospital, where a blood test revealed a .503 percent blood alcohol.

La Porte County Coroner John Sullivan, who's also a La Porte firefighter and first responder, said a .40 percent BAC can be lethal or at least cause unconsciousness.

Clark was kept overnight at the hospital as a precaution and discharged at 10 a.m. the next morning, police said. Clark was then booked into the La Porte County Jail on Class D felony resisting law enforcement and Class A misdemeanor operating while intoxicated.

According to wiki, the LD50 for alcohol (specifically ethanol) is .45 -- this guy beat the odds.
