Powerful high-speed boats will race across the Lake Michigan coastline here for the 12th annual Great Lakes Grand Prix this weekend.

They include the likes of a Class One division team, Miss GEICO, with a 47-foot catamaran weighing 1,750 pounds and with twin 1,100 horsepower engines that will be in the last race of the day Sunday.

Some race teams will begin arriving on Thursday and more on Friday afternoon. AquaX races and powerboat testing will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CDT Saturday, with all classes of racing the same hours on Sunday. The race village will be open to the public Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Washington Park. A free shuttle will run from Ames Field, 2501 Franklin St.

With 249,400 offshore powerboat racing fans in town for the early August Great Lakes Grand Prix in Michigan City, Ind., the event generated S17.7 million for LaPorte County, according to a press release from the Michigan City LaPorte Visitors Bureau. Both are records for the 12-year-old event, which was the fifth stop in the six-race, second-year American Power Boat Association Offshore National Championship Series produced by the Offshore Powerboat Association and Powerboat P1/P1 Offshore groups.

It is a great and fun event for MIchigan City but I would like to see the data showing where between 62,500 cars (4 per car) and 125,000 cars (2 per car) parked over the 4 day event.

This has been going on for years. With each successive event, it gets a bit bigger, drawing in a bit more people, and "creating" a bit more money for the community. Weird how it only goes up over time, right?

Going back through old news articles and press releases this is what I could put together for a history. N/A's are years I couldn't find.
