'Kindness Week' Observed

MICHIGAN CITY - More than 250 students at Michigan City High School were caught red-handed earlier this month - being kind.

In a Kindness Week celebration coordinated by the school's food service staff earlier this month, MCHS teachers and staff were encouraged to give "kindness coupons" to students witnessed doing something kind. Students could then enter those coupons into a drawing to win iPod Nanos and other prizes.

By the end of the week, 256 coupons had been awarded for actions ranging from picking up trash to carrying heavy books to sharing words of encouragement.

"We see students showing compassion at our high school every day," said Martha Silverthorn, of MCAS Food Services. "Most of those small kindnesses go unrecognized. So we wanted to honor students for their actions."

Prizes were awarded to: Emily Young, Katherine Stoll, Terry Miller, Jessica Underwood, Adam Siegmun, Whitley Pajor, Tiffany Curley, Ashley Pagels, Desemon Byrd, Ismenia Riveria, Kristin Everly, and Sean Smith.

The Kindness Week initiative also raised $170 through a penny drive in the MCHS cafeteria. Proceeds were donated to the Michigan City Homeless Shelter to help children with special dietary needs.

The following Michigan City High School students received "kindness coupons."
