Eric: Not to digress but would you be Ken Hanke's son? You look a lot alike from your photo here.

Not son... grandson. My father is Gregg Hanke, Ken's son.

Both my father (Gregg) and Grandfather (Ken) are doing well. Here is a photo of me (Eric / in blue), my younger brother (Jeremy / in red), and our father and grandfather from July. My dad was the one who had the 1930's Ford Model "A" in the July parade in remembrance of the Michigan City residents who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the Vietnam War.

Say hello to Ken for me. He was very active in Republican politics when we set up our on-street news department for WEFM in l969. My how time flies when you are having fun. He and John Shawley were Mr. Republicans. Can you tell me how to reach Ken? We may want to do something on air for our 40th anniversary next year. Actually the station was founded two years earlier by MC native Howard Dennewitz from CBS and I was later brought in as a consultant to find out how to make it work, and ended up moving to MC and buying the station, the first of several.

Triumphant Return
Family, friends, fans welcome home Marquette volleyball team.

Deborah Sederberg
The News-Dispatch

MICHIGAN CITY - They came home triumphantly, escorted to the parking lot of Marquette High School's Scholl Center on a city fire truck.

The truck arrived with appropriate fanfare by horn and siren. What's more, the bells of St. Mary's welcomed the team home, courtesy of the Rev. James McGrogan, pastor of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

Graciously, the Indiana State Class A Volleyball Champions accepted cheers from family, friends and fans gathered in Marquette's gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

For the fifth year in a row, and the eighth in the past 10 years, the Blazers brought the state championship home.

They worked for it, coach Troy Campell said. In addition, they had the support of their classmates, Marquette faculty and administration and most of all, their families.

"Their parents treated these ladies like divas," he said. "They deserved it."

Campbell offered special thanks to Dr. Mary Ann Fumo, mother of senior player Jenna Fumo.

"She always puts things together, arranges for hotels" and offers support wherever she can, Campbell said.

Dr. David Fumo, Jenna's dad, said the family has been with the team for some time. Jenna's older sister, Nicole, played on the championship teams in 2004 and 2005.

Dave Fumo said Campbell focuses on the girls as individuals and team members. The coach teaches more than volleyball skills.

"He teaches life lessons," David Fumo said.

Marquette Principal Jim White thanked team members for "enduring the ride in the fire engine" in Sunday's frosty temperatures.

He called the team "an example of excellence and hard work."

Campbell thanked Dick Schaefer, who teaches AP government at Marquette, and is always ready to offer help or support to students.

And he thanked White.

Referring to the principal's enthusiasm, he said, "I thought we were going to have to get someone to control you."

After the rally, students and parents attended Sunday Mass celebrated by the Rev. Terry Chase, pastor of Queen of All Saints Church, in the gym.
