Comcast Cares Day

QUOTE
The Michigan City Senior Center will host the Comcast Cares Day on Saturday, April 30, 2011 from 7:30am-1:00pm. Comcast Cares Day is Comcast's annual company-wide day of service in which tens of thousands of Comcast employees, along with their families and friends, volunteer in their local communities. Comcast is committed to improving the quality of life in local communities where customers and employees live and work. Comcast works with existing local nonprofit organizations to positively impact each community served.

The project chosen for the Senior Center is to build a handicap accessible ramp that will lead from the Senior Center parking lot down to the high water mark on the beach. It enables those who are unable to walk through the sand to have accessibility to the beautiful scenic views of Lake Michigan. Several smaller scope projects were also selected including: 1) Clean up of the back patio and planting the planter boxes. 2) Clearing out an area in the front of the Senior Center and planting flowers/landscaping in addition to planting flowers in the flower boxes out front. 3) Sweeping the sand back from the sidewalks so all sidewalks and handicap ramps are wheelchair accessible. 4) Clearing & planting some flowers in the areas at the entrance to our parking areas. In addition, the Washington Park Zoo has been selected as an additional site for sweeping and planting to ensure there is enough work for all volunteers. Credit is given for every volunteer that works that day. Participants don’t have to do heavy lifting, or heavy physical labor if they don’t want to or are unable to. There are many small tasks to be done that can fit anyone’s capabilities (including registering volunteers, making coffee, refilling water pitchers, etc). Volunteers can be any age. Registration in advance is CRITICAL (it’s how Comcast calculates funding) and forms are available at the Michigan City Senior Center or online at www.emichigancity.com Our goal is 1,000 volunteers! Breakfast (continental style) AND lunch (port-a-pit chicken) are provided by Comcast for all volunteers. For add’l info, please contact the Director, Tara Miller at 873-1504.
