This is an IMMATURE BALD EAGLE. They have nested in the Indiana Dunes this year for the first time in more than decades so this may be one of the young from that nest. Great photo. Thanks so much for sharing it. This is a good birding record.

MICHIGAN CITY — Ogden Dunes resident Tom Dogan photographed an eagle at the Michigan City lakefront and is sharing a picture he took last Sunday. The bird reportedly was seen in the area of the marina all week.

“I always hoped to see a bird so magnificent in this area,” he said Friday. He saw the eagle while in Michigan City, where he keeps his boat at Washington Park Marina.

Dogan said he believed it was a juvenile bald eagle, which was confirmed by Brad Bumbardner, interpretive naturalist at Indiana Dunes State Park, Porter, who examined Dogan’s photos.

“This bird is clearly a bald eagle. Good field marks include the white underwing and darker bill, which indicate it’s a first year bird,” he said. “It is pretty rare to see golden eagles in this area in summer. It’s easy to mistake an immature bald eagle for a golden eagle.”

He said a few bald eagles nest in Indiana. The nearest known pair are at the Kankakee Fish and Wildlife Area in North Judson, Bumbardner said.

Here's a video of a herd of mule deer that were grazing in my neighbors field across the street yesterday evening:

Very cool. We are very lucky to have the wildlife in the area that we have.
