MICHIGAN CITY — A petition by property owner Dr. Rade M. Pejic seeking permission to locate a truck leasing business at 117 W. 11th St. was withdrawn from consideration by the Michigan City Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday.

Zoning administrator Nathan Anderson told the board the request for the use variance for that site had been withdrawn by the property owner. The petition had drawn opposition from neighbors. Pejic can refile the petition with the board in three months, pursuant to Michigan City ordinances.

Board member Ricky Jackson requested that Anderson investigate the site for any potential violations, including continuing to lease trucks from that location. If there are violations found, the board authorized Anderson to issue citations.

In other action:

The board approved a petition by the Rev. Danny T. Brown to operate a church in a building at 301 Belle Road. The building had been previously used as a legion hall and a church, and by a neighbor as an after-hours club.

The use variance and a variance to allow both residential and church use to occur on the same lot were approved with conditions. These conditions include that parking areas be graveled, that available parking be provided at a minimum of one space for every three seats and that the hours of operation be restricted to 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.

• A petition presented by Belicia Hicks to expand the chapel area of Hicks Funeral Home on Karwick Road has been continued to a special meeting scheduled for 7 p.m., July 26 in the Michigan City council chambers.

• Also to be heard at that time is a petition for a use variance for Lake Shore Landscaping to sell related products from a location on U.S. Highway 12 at the East Business Center subdivision.
