A group of four of us went to Stop 50 pizza on Portal over by the stables last night. I fancy myself as a foodie and am ashamed that I haven't been there already. It was really nice. The wood burning oven is the focal point of the restaurant. This thing is cool, a semispherical old style pizza oven. Chris told us that at room temp, it take 14 days to get the oven up to temp. Up to temp means 900 degrees 1" below the cooking surface and an air temp of 1400 degrees! The pizzas are all made out from a very thin sourdough crusty from a ten year old starter which is pretty impressive. One the fresh ingredients are on the pie, they cook it for 90 seconds and it's done. The ingredients are top notch and all fresh, the dough is tasty, chew and crispy all at the same time. This is a traditional Naples style pizza and has nothing to do with what you'd find at most pizza places. Not the cheapest pizza but it is something special and it's in our backyard. I know I'll be a frequent flyer!
BTW, there is a foodie group based in Chicago called the LTH forums and they voted Stop 50 as THE BEST PIZZA in all of Chicago land! That's impressive and warrants a visit by itself. http://www.stop50woodfiredpizzeria.com/ |

Ate lunch here again and had a camera with me, figured I'd snap a couple pics. The pleasant dining room.
Here is the wood fired oven. Action shot! Chris the owner sliding our pies in the inferno The final result: I am now convinced this is the best pizza around by a land slide. It's just soooo good! All the fresh ingredients, the excellent dough, the technique, it all ads up to a great neopolitan pie. If you do go, arrive with an open mind and an open wallet as it's not the cheapest but IMHO, it's worth every penny! |

The herbs are grown at the joint and freshly picked daily, I understand. I am going to try it again because I went with some friends who really are not into good eats, and I could not dig into the menu like I normally would.

Well they have a lot of herbs and stuff growing in the planters but I don't think they have enough capacity so they do outsource some as well. They get the tomatoes from the guy in Three Oaks who has an heirloom hydroponic tomato farm. They do have a nice beer and wine list including bottle of silver oak at a good price and good micro-brews. I've had all of the pizzas and my favorites are the Martguerita, The Sausage and the prosciutto which has pistachios, garlic and rosemary on it. Oh man, they're all really good. They bought an ice cream machine and they're making their own frozen desserts from scratch as well. It's all quite tasty. |
