Cavaliers take first place at Drum Corp International Tour

MICHIGAN CITY — Life on the road with a Drum Corps International group is go-go all the time. From Memorial Day to the National Championships in mid-August, there isn't too much time for Corps members and staff to see much of the cities they visit on tour.

But employees from four Corps visiting Michigan City Saturday night for the event at Ames Field like the parts they have seen.

"It has a really good small town feel," said Mike Freeland, assistant tour director of the Colts, who are in their fourth year as a corps out of Dubuque, Iowa. "You can tell people come out to these events like the parade. Our members enjoy playing good tunes in front of people that appreciate it."

Bart Jonker, treasurer of the Legends out of Kalamazoo, Michigan said Michigan City is always a stop on their summer tour. "We love coming back here, the performers really like how the field is maintained, (Ames Field) is a great stadium."

While the Colts and Legends have only been marching for four years, the Cavaliers, a group out of Rosemont, Illinois, have been competing since 1948. Years of tradition proved beneficial for them Saturday night, as the organization won the event with an 80.100 final score.

Don Rasin has been a volunteer for the group since he marched in the Cavaliers corps in 1972 and 1973.

"We've been coming here forever," he said. "In the 1970s, we had a few Michigan City kids in the corps."

Like Jonker, Rasin is pleased with Ames Field.

"We like the change from the old baseball stadium to this place," he said.

The Cavaliers' closest challenge Saturday night came from The Bluecoats, from N. Canton, Ohio. They received a 76.400 score.

Adam Bostick is in his second year working for the corps as their summer merchandise sales manager. This, he said, was his first visit to Michigan City.

"So far it is pretty nice, and we like being here," he said.

But after Saturday evening, it was on the road again for the nine corps that treated Michigan City residents to memorable shows at the Summer Festival Parade in the afternoon as well as the main event at night.

"We don't get to do much sightseeing," Rasin said. "We are all focused on getting ready for the regional and then the championship in Indianapolis next month."

In the World Class Division, following the Cavaliers and the Bluecoats were the Blue Stars (74.000 score), Glassmen (70.900), Troopers (70.200), Colts (68.900) and Pioneer (60.100). The Open Class scores included the Legends (64.500) and Colt Cadets (60.300).
