Arrest made after fatal hit and run in Michigan City

MICHIGAN CITY — An arrest has been made following a fatal hit and run accident involving a car and motorcycle in Michigan City.

Capt. Stephen Jesse, commander of the Michigan City Police traffic division, said 38-year-old Matthew Schmidt is charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident, a level 5 felony.

Robert Altherr, 58, was hit on his motorcycle and transported to a nearby hospital. He was later pronounced dead.

The collision happened before 7 a.m. at 400 North and Cleveland Ave. on the southern edge of Michigan City Wednesday.

Police say Schmidt left the scene on foot and was walking along U.S 421 when police located him.
