City by the Lake.org, The Voice of Michigan City, Indiana _ City at rest _ Pronunciation of "Koethe"

Posted by: Michelle Jan 28 2009, 09:59 AM

Hi everyone, silly question, but I need an answer--How is "Koethe" pronounced, as in Judge Jennifer Koethe (nee Evans)?

Thanks so much!

I don't know for sure, but when I tried it, it sounded unkoethe!

At any rate, was this guy divorced from his wife before he got involved with Jennifer Evans? Do you think the ex harbors a little extra animosity above and beyond the concern she professes for the safety of those chilluns?

That I would say is probably none of our business. My interest is in the area of whether or not Judge-Elect Evans ( as she was at the time of the incident) has covered up anything related to this incident. If indeed there was some cover up and non-disclosure of all the facts to the appropriate authorities, I would have to think that she would be removed from the position.

The article said that she filed for the divorce, and they've been divorced for 6 years. Animosity should not be an issue at this point, IMO.
I know that if I found out that my young children were in my ex's house when a gun went off and there was alcohol involved; I'd be infuriated! You can't deny that guns and alcohol don't mix; and again, if I found out that my young children were exposed to that situation, by my ex, or anyone else, I'd be very angry, and would seek changes.
There are a lot of unknowns in the articles over this. I'm interested in what others on this site think. CBTL tends to give me perspective.

Agreed re guns/alcohol/kids! The ND tends to hint at stuff but no definite facts. Regarding the predivorce involvement, I would put more weight to that issue than seems usual nowadays. If one found out one's spouse was indulging in infidelity, one cannot be blamed for filing.

At any rate, that is kind of a sidebar to this issue.

The only legal question seems to be if she withheld info or attempted to cover up something about the incident.

I agree; infidelity is a side-bar issue. However, that kind of divorce is much nastier and more hurtful.
I couldn't agree more with the legal question.
Pre-election, it seems there were some issues about a case she was handling. Critics were saying she might have been show-boating for votes. It's in a thread on this site. Does anyone remember? During some down time, I'll see if I can find it.

I completely agree with you. When I've read the articles, I tend to be thinking, "What's being covered up?", not "Justice has been served."

Infidelity and divorce is just a sidebar to the main guns & alcohol & kids story. I do not mean to minimize the importance of I&D. It speaks loads to the character of the judge and her current husband.

Is being a LaPorte County Prosecutor dangerous to the point that guns (plural) are required? I understand that County Prosecutors carry a weapon as part of the job, however, I got the impression from the 911 call that guns were in the house. The visual running through my mind is a gun at the bedside on the nightstand, one propped next to the chair in the living room and one by the front and back doors. The husband did say they were getting the “guns” out after the baby sitter left.

This feels wrong on so many levels.

cute laugh.gif But that's a guess, right? I apologize for being obtuse, but it's hard to tell for sure on the Internet.

I probably should have put this in the current thread on the Evans shooting, but I was hoping for a quick answer. Sorry SSider/Ang/Dave.

Wasn't it the Baby Jane Doe case where the woman was accused of being the mother of a new born infant found dead on their property?
The mother ended up being acquitted.

No big deal. I just moved that thread to the front for the new news story, so it would have been hard to find anyway. This site is still small enough where there is no real need for thread police to keep everything in line. It is very relaxed here, which is exactly how I like it!

Yes, a guess. I actually asked someone who knows them, or has met them, and that person did not know, either.

My best guess would be Kathe, with a long a sound.

And Michelle, if we think there are too many threads on one topic we will combine them and make a note about it, so no worries...

I am probably wrong on this as well ... but I think it once said as Keth

Actually that makes better sense to me because of the Koepke's. The "O" is silent so it is pronounced Kep-Key. It would make sense that Koethe is pronounced the same way. Or maybe it's Keth-ee and not plain Keth.

I think it is Keth-ee, too.

i've gotten a response from someone who should know that it's Coat-hey or Kurt-ha (apparently either is acceptable linguistically; I'm not sure which is preferred by the party in question). I'm going with that explanation for now, until someone corrects me smile.gif This turned out to be a harder question than I originally anticipated. Thanks everyone!

You are welcome.

This thread illustrates what is good and what is bad with the websociety. Good: You got an answer. Bad: You had to wade through 22 posts to get it!

Have a kick-dupa day, everyone!!

Well, I don't understand where the r sound comes from since there is no "r" in the name.

I'm told and have seen elsewhere that "Koe-", in the Russian pronunciation, is "Ker-".

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jan 31 2009, 09:10 AM

Since the interest is overwhelming, here goes:

Since Koethe is a German name, we know that the -oe- is pronounced as the high, closed vowel common to many languages but, alas, not to English. The Germans are averse to using umlauts in spelling proper names, hence the oe instead of ö. Since this vowel sound does not occur in English, various means to describing its production are used. My favorite is to form the lips as to make a long o sound without the following oo sound; this should result in a relaxed, rounded state. The tongue is raised as it is for the e sound as in bed. When you are practicing this, you can glide from one to the other: e--ö--o, and back again. For our Gallic friends, this sound is spelled eu, as in Meuse.

Now, if you have the lips and tongue in position to make the ö sound, curl up just the tip of your tongue, and wa lah! you get to what we would describe as an r sound. Therefore, Ker' tuh. This is one way the English-speaking world, and apparently, according to Michelle, the Russian, deals with this vowel. Another way is to ignore the o and just pronounce a short e, as the Koepke's do.

I first hear this in 7th grade, by the way, incidental to when a teacher was describing the Koenigsburg Puzzle as an introduction to nodes theory. Public school, Elston JH. I wonder how Everyday Math covers this material.

The careful reader will have noticed the use of wa lah! above. This is a disclaimer acknowledging its use on purpose as a humorous way of writing voila, one the writer has actually seen, among others.

Coming home from an evening out with the wife, sendind the sitter on her way. The kids are in bed. The last dam thing in the world I am gonna be doing is thinking about getting out the pistols that shoot bullets. Romance sure ain't what it used to be!

I dunno. If you thought the movie "Rio Bravo" was a romance flick....
