QUOTE New Owners, Same Family Majerek brothers change ownership for Readers World, two other gift shops, but no other changes foreseen. Deborah Sederberg The News-Dispatch MICHIGAN CITY - Majerek's Hallmark in Marquette Mall now is Marie's Hallmark, but it's still owned by a member of the Majerek family. Janet McCoy, manager of Marie's Hallmark, Readers World in Marquette Mall and Marie's Gift Shop (formerly Majerek's Hallmark) in Maple Lane Mall in La Porte, said ownership changed from Mike Majerek to Tom Majerek. The two are brothers. "Now, the La Porte store will be a discount store known as Marie's Gift Shop," McCoy said. Many items will sell for 50 to 70 percent below retail, she said. In addition, she said, the Marquette Mall Hallmark store now will stock Hallmark RED items. RED is the concept created by Bono of the band U2, and Bobby Shriver, chairman of DATA - which stand for Debt, AIDS, Trade AFRICA - to fight the HIV/AIDS in Africa. A portion of the profits from Hallmark's RED merchandise will be donated to the fight against AIDS in Africa. RED items include both cards and gift items. In addition to the RED inventory, the stores will stock a host of new merchandise. "We will have a grand opening celebration after the holidays," McCoy added. She said there would be "absolutely no change" inpersonnel at the three stores. McCoy and Readers World are participants in and supporters of Operation Bookworm, a project of The News-Dispatch, in cooperation with The Salvation Army, to collect new books for needy children. The Salvation Army distributes the books along with toys and other gifts during its annual Christmas project for needy families. Readers World gives a 20 percent discount on books for the Bookworm program. The Bookstore in Lighthouse Place offers the same discount. Contact Deborah Sederberg at dsederberg@thenewsdispatch.com. |
