QUOTE Posted Online: 2007-06-05 $700,000-plus for MC library upgrades Comment on this story MICHIGAN CITY — More than $700,000 in improvements is on its way to Michigan City Public Library this year. The first of three projects begins June 18 on a 784-square-foot storage facility built between the library and the alley that will be completed in November at a cost of $126,000, according to library director Don Glossinger. The extra space is necessary because there is no central place where equipment and suppliers are stored. More details on the projects and its effect on the surrounding area will appear in Wednesday’s La Porte County Herald-Argus. |

The firehouse that was torn down could have been used for storage, couldn't it have?

My guess is that this will end up costing a lot more than $700K. Where is the money coming from for these improvements, anyway? Or did I miss that somewhere?

When Joe Ramion (RIP) was on the Board, he took great pride in that the Library did not have any debt, and he plainly would have wanted to keep it that way.

Being on the YMCA's board, I can say that our job would be a lot easier if we weren't carrying a boatload of debt. Debt is not a smart thing for any Not For Profit to be involved it. The business cycle is too volitile for that to be smart.

I am all for improvements to the library - especial those funded without debt obligations, however, with the controversy around whether to re-locate the building, is this the right time for these expenditures. I think that there needs to either a referendum on the issue or a non-binding vote from the city council on whether this issue should be seriously addressed or not. We need some sort of up/down vote on the issue and then we move forward. I just don't want to spend $700k on something that gets torn down in two years.
