QUOTE Office Depot to open Michigan City store Comment on this story Scot Squires, 1-866-362-2167 Ext. 13869, ssquires@heraldargus.com 24,336-square-foot store to be located in former Toys R Us building MICHIGAN CITY -- Another national retailer will soon be coming to Michigan City. Office Depot will be opening in the former Toys R Us location at 4100 Franklin St. The 24,336-square-foot store will be slightly larger than the retailer’s typical store, which is 24,000 square feet, spokeswoman Melissa Perlman told The La Porte County Herald-Argus. The company chose Michigan City because it saw opportunities in the community. “We are constantly looking for new locations to better meet our customers’ needs,” she said. “Office Depot has been expanding at a rapid rate. We will be opening 125 new stores in 2007 and plan to open 150 stores in 2008.” As of June 30, the Delray Beach, Fla.-based company had 1,186 stores in North America, making it the second largest office-supply store behind Staples. In addition to typical office supplies, the store will sell office furniture, computers, computer equipment, software, printers, digital cameras, cellular phones and ink and toner. Plus, there will be a graphic design and print center and a shipping center. The company will use their new format for this store. This means some of the merchandise will be arranged into “pods,” where similar products are grouped into a section with three small walls. The design also incorporates lower shelving to make it easier to see around the store and updated signage and lighting. Office Depot will be the third major office-supply store in the county. Michigan City already has an Office Max and there is a Staples in La Porte. The store will employ 20 to 25 full- and part-time workers. The grand opening is slated for Oct. 7, but customers will be able to shop as early as Sept. 28, Perlman said. During the grand opening, Office Depot will donate $500 checks to three local nonprofit organizations that have not yet been chosen. “We want to tell the community that not only are we open for business but we are a member of your community,” Perlman said. |

I think you got the wrong Depot in your subject line. (Not "Home"...) Put simply, mean reversion is a bitch. -Vitaliy Katsenelson

Besides the new business, what is good about this is the use of an existing building instead of leaving a hulk and spreading the city unnecessarily.
