The picture of the damage at the Pullman building is incredible with the lightning in the backround. I'll have to post some of my "Not a Tornado" of '06 pictures.

I did go to SP class of 88.

I got some really cool pictures of the ice shelf and lighthouse yesterday up at the Washington Park. I have to get them onto my computer at home so I can post them.

Posted by: southsider2k7 Jan 30 2007, 07:11 PM

As promised, my pics from the lake yesterday. The first one is my personal fav, because it shows how hard the wind was blowing. The snow was blasted into the sand, and not on top of it.

As for the rest the shelf-ice was built up to about 3-4 feet in most spots, and there was an interesting out crop off to the east side of the park beach.

I'm attaching a few of my favorites...the first two were taken by a friend of ours, and I took the other two.

yeah, no doubt, having taken my amatuer shots, I am very impressed by your work!

Posted by: Jank May 2 2007, 12:27 PM

Thanks...on both counts!

I stumbled on this site earlier today, and I was impressed to see that there are nearly 300 members. I've read a lot of the postings and have enjoyed my time on the site.

I'm a self-employed marketing and community relations consultant; my largest client is the City of Michigan City, but I also work with non-profits, contractors, health care professionals, bed & breakfasts, and for-profit businesses.

While I work for the mayor (Sheila Brillson and Chuck Oberlie), I speak only for myself. Working with the city for six years now, I've learned much about local government that I'd never known before. It's been a wonderful education for me, and the result has been that I've had the opportunity to become really involved with the community - on a level I had previously never even thought about. I strongly encourage people to get involved with community groups. You'll see the "inner workings" of government and non-profits and be more aware of how things happen...or don't happen.

Consider this...would you apply for, strive for, work hard to get a job and then do your darndest to do poorly at it? Few if any would do that. Would you work so hard to get a job that demanded an almost 24/7 availability of your time and involvement? Few would. Would you strive to get a job that almost guaranteed that you would be the target of misinformation, rants, and outright lies about your abilities, your efforts, your achievements, your very character? Again, few would.

I don't remember who said it first, but..."just because it's written in a newspaper or a book or on the internet...or spoken on a radio or a television...doesn't mean it's true."

That is a very good statement, and I one took to heart last year. To really make things change, it has to begin with you. That's why I determined to get involved in City life last year. That's why I ran for office, that's why I joined the board of trustees at the YMCA, and that's why I created this message board. I don't care about getting recognized, or even as much elected. I care about making life better for people, just as there were people who worked hard to get me to the place I am today.

Posted by: Jank May 3 2007, 07:12 AM

Ghandi said, "Be the changes you wish to see."
I do my best to live up to that challenge and have always encouraged my children to follow that same path.
I am frequently "the boat rocker" - the person who asks the unspoken/uncomfortable questions. Stimulating conversation often leads to new thoughts, ideas, concepts, and ACTION. I have sat in too many meetings where there is far too much talk and too little action taken. I strive to make something happen.

People like you who get involved with the community - on any level - are to be commended. There simply aren't enough people willing to expend their time and energies to do more than complain about things.

An example: The library has a perpetual waiting list of almost 80 people who have requested literacy skills training. The library continually seeks volunteers to become tutors...and has even tried to PAY people to become literacy tutors. NO takers. This is a common situation throughout NW Indiana regarding literacy - as well as most other organizations which depend on volunteers. Some schools and service organizations require their members/students to complete 'x' number of hours as a volunteer in the community - a program which is awesome - but it just isn't enough.

Just another of my many soapboxes.

I have a nice Chicago connection in my family so I have a soft spot for it, not to mention I do work there. My grandparents on my moms side, and great grandparents on my dads side were from there.

Here is another one from the day of the fireworks of the orginal lighthouse with the sun behind it.

I was up in Indiana in late September to help my older daughter move back home. I rented a car and came up to MC for a night. The weather was great and it was really nice to see that MC made a nature trail/preserve out of the Ruby woods. When I was a kid my back yard was up against the woods and I have a lot of fond memories of it... Here is the chimney that was back there. Now there is a trail up to it. How about dat?

Could anyone give help on uploading photos?

Posted by: Ang Jan 16 2008, 01:34 PM

If the pic is on your computer:

Go to "add reply"
Scroll down to File Attachments and click the browse button
Navigate through your files until you find the picture you want to upload and double click it.
Click "Add this Attachment" button
The page will refresh and you will see your attachement under the browse button. Next to that will be a button that says, "Add into post" Click that.
The attachement will be added into your post wherever your cursor is. So, put your cursor in the post where you want the attachment to be before you click "add into post"
When the attachment is in the post you will see something like this:

Then click "add reply" The attachment will convert into a little picture like The Mikester's post above that you have to click on to see a larger image.

If the pic is online, like photobucket or something:

Go to "add reply"
Click on the little tree icon at the top of the text window.
Paste the url of the pic you want to post and click okay.
That will put the pic directly into your post like how CCR does it.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jan 16 2008, 04:15 PM

That just does not work...

Posted by: Ang Jan 17 2008, 10:14 AM

Someone will have to bring a laptop to the meet & greet with internet access and we can give a tutorial of the board so people can learn how to do various things.
I don't know why it's not working for you. I'm sure you're following the directions and I don't think I missed a step or anything.

CALLING ALL LAPTOP OWNERS
If anyone has a laptop that can access the internet and you are planning to attend the meet & greet, please bring it with you so the Admin team can give tutorials of board functions.

Thank you.

Ang - this is a photo from my birthday party at Sullivan's on 12/22 - it's from my Photobucket account - you have to paste the IMAGE CODE - not the url. If you post the url it'll look like the thing under the pic.

The third photo you posted on March 11, 2007 is awe-inspiring. For the lake to be that calm, and the sky to match the lake so precisely... Yes, I know I'm a behind the times, but I wanted to comment on that photo, point it out so that a few other people blow it up and look at it, and let you know I am using it for my desktop wallpaper at school. Not everything on Flickr is digital.

Digital and film, same concept different tools. A good digital can do about anything a film camera can.

That can be done just as easily with a print that has been scanned. But you're right, there is a lot of photshopping done on flickr...as well as some pics that people have lifted from others, yet claim the be their own.

Huh. I find it interesting that someone who can't post a picture on a blog is able to discern which images are photo shopped and which aren't.

For what it's worth, the pics that I've posted here have no photo chopping. That said, I would think there is an abundance of "art" with the advent of programs such as photo shop. If it's not art, I suppose it's correct in saying that now more than ever the populous is able to flex their creative muscle a lot easier now than in the dark room days.

Same thing goes for film or lack of. Now that very high quality pro-sumer video camera's are available, it's much more accessible for the average Joe to make a good looking film. This means there is a lot of junk out there (check out youtube) but this also gives a lot of people opportunities that they wouldn't have had 20 years ago.

A few quick pics from my quick vacation to Silver Lake, Michigan. My family has spent a week up there every summer, except one, since 1970. It's beautiful. What I like to do most is run across the dunes to Lake Michigan at sunrise (or sunset, although it's more crowded then). This time I took a camera with.

All this talk about the coal tower inspired me to stop and take a couple pics of this pillar from the past

the chute that would convey the coal up

Roberts and Schaefer Co. from Chicago designed and built the tower. They're still in business in a similar capacity.

One of the two reasons this tower is still standing, it's reinforced to the hilt with steel. It would also require shutting down the line for a couple days. Someday, it'll come down though.

Silver Lake is a fun place, isn't it? Did you bring any toys to play on the sanddunes with? I've been up there on dirt bikes before, lot's of fun but it's pretty dangerous during the summer. Lot's of guys drinking beer on high power machines = a bad mixture. lol

No ghosts in the tower, the freakiest thing I saw by far was that MONSTER bush of poison ivy. I couldn't look at it too long otherwise I'd start itching. I've already been through two bouts with it this year, one that lasted for a month and required to prescriptions of the nasty drug prednisone. Ugggghhhh.

I wanted to get some sort of topical ointment cause I don't like prednisone. There is a good soap called Tecnu that helps if it's mild or to wash off the oils before a rash appears.

Congratulations are in order, Roger. Beautiful photos. I'm going to use the winter road picture as my wall paper for a while, because, believe it or not, I sort of like winter.

Roger, notice that the picture below was left in its original digital size without me resizing it first in photobucket, which is what I have been doing lately:

Kind of depends on the size of the image. If they are huge image files (I have a 13mil megpix camera) it would take for ever to upload one image let alone twenty. Chances are it'd fault out. I usually crop my horizontal pics to a max width of 1200 and verticals I do 1000 or 800.

Vehicle Thrust Into Church

Laurie Wink
The News-Dispatch

Minor injuries are reported in Thursday morning accident at Emmanuel Baptist.

MICHIGAN CITY - A 65-year-old Mill Creek man made an unexpected stop at a church Thursday morning.

Randall Jones Sr. collided with Kimberly Riley, 29, 722 Freyer Road, at Eastwood and Freyer roads at about 7:25 a.m. The collision pushed Jones' 2006 Chevrolet Express into Emmanuel Baptist Temple, 820 Eastwood Road.

Jones had an abrasion on his face and Jones complained of pain in her chest. Neither sought medical treatment.

Jones told police he never saw the stop sign and kept going through the intersection with Freyer Road. Riley, driving west on Freyer Road, reported she stopped and then proceeded into the intersection.

At that point, Riley told police, Jones drove in front of her 2004 Chevrolet Trail Blazer and she collided with Jones, pushing his car into the church.

No report was available on damage to the church.

I have the little progress line on that shows up just above the start button, and that is where it says Transferring data from img.photobucket.com.

Posted by: Roger Kaputnik Jul 28 2008, 12:04 PM

First one is the fountain.

Second is the Amtrak siding switch by the DNR.

Third is at the new park by Krueger Jr Hi. In the background is a ditch that flows into Trail Creek, which is flowing from the fisherman's left to right.

The flowers are from Millenium Park.

The stones are from the track bed by the DNR.

Posted by: ChickenCityRoller Jul 28 2008, 12:11 PM

well I got the fountain and the train tracks was pretty much a given with the Nipsco building in the back.

I haven't been to the park by Krueger since it's been built but we used to go back by the train trestle back there to go fishing when I was younger. We'd either ride bikes right there by the honk bridge or park a car at the bowling alley and walk through that field at night.

Yes, that is our new skyscraper. We've finally made it! The building is a part of our skyline now, no denying it.

The marsh is on the east side of the Moon Valley land tract. A little dried out this time of year.

Hey, I cheated and backtracked the picture link.

Posted by: Ang Aug 14 2008, 01:28 PM

I did not say it WASN'T Yellowstone. I said if it was, it would have to have been taken sometime in April, May, or early June, because after that everything turns brown. Beyond the waterfall toward the right, there is a field of some sort. It's still kinda green, but you can see yellowish/brown patches beginning to form. By July 1st that whole field would be dead looking.
Besides, Yellowstone is on fire right now. Not as bad as in the 80's, but I heard on the radio the other day that parts of the park closed because of burning. They actually said the dead trees from the 80's fire is what has been keeping this one from getting out of control.

Posted by: Marram Aug 14 2008, 02:02 PM

Dave and Roger -- you were both right. Yellowstone National Park, it was. The first picture is during the evening just north of Norris. The second is actually about two hours earlier on Howard Eaton Trail between Mammouth Falls and Mt. Bunsen. And the third is even earlier that day, Friday, 8/8/08 BTW, at the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone. I thought my first picture with the rainbow, which was from Saturday, labeled from WY would surely give it away.

Ang, where do you live in WY? We might have driven right by your house.

Ssider mentioned that there were no mountains like that in MI, and a discussion ensued about the UP. Any mountains like this in the UP?:

You found my uncle Wayne! We missed that particular piece of Americana. We took 90 to 16 to 14 to West Yellowstone. Then 89 to 189 to 191 to 80 on the way back.

You mentioned the fires, so here you go. Here are a progression of photos as we approached and then passed by Cody. We traveled through a mountain wildfire, and the dark one is supposed to be of a Lodgepole Pine that burst into flames about 50 yards from the car. The troopers let us through, but we did not waste anytime getting out of the car to set up for a night shot. Actually, it was unreal, like something from Disney World, the mountains lit up by thousands of bright red dots.

The last picture is from Mt Washburn in Yellowstone. You can see the fires in Yellowstone in the distance. They were not really an issue the five days we spent there.

And is that the behemoth Blue Chimp Hotel in the far background?

Yes, north of Barker about halfway to Homer St.

Thanks! The last one are some dead dune grasses which until two nights ago were standing staight up in the air. They got covered in ice and the whole grass flopped over. My favorite is the third one, which is an apple tree in my drive. Notice how there is more ice on the topside of the branch, kind of cool.

Yeah, as you know, I was supposed to go to Chicago yesterday. I went about five miles down 94 and stuck a fork in that idea.

The lens I was using for those pics is a unique, strange thing called a lens baby. Very strange effects. It basically turns your SLR in to a view camera and you can play with the parallax. Gimmicky but kinda fun.

Great pics, everybody, keep 'em coming.
I guess like the Pretenders say, "my city is gone". Was doing some internet searching and looked at some aerials of MC. Looked at where the MC airport used to be and it's now all built up. Used to be just empty fields out there and a few run down houses. Even saw what I think is another MickeyD's by there. I can remember when the one on Franklin St opened up. Out here all the schools are now prisons (or look like it) with their metals fences. I thought MC would be different, but I can see Edgewood now has a fence all around it. I remember when you could walk across the Edgewood field and play basketball at the hoops. I also remember jumping Ruby's fence behind the field and seeing their oriental backyard. It was cool. I also saw that pic of the snow at Coolspring/Franklin. A CVS? I remember when Hook's was there and you could actually buy chemicals there. I used to buy salt peter and sulfur there to make smoke bombs. I guess I've said the city has changed before, but I didn't realize how much until I saw the aerials and your pics.

That boat name is pronounced Mick Oh Sue Key. It's the name of an indian tribe in Florida. They own casinos in Florida and that casino sponsors the boat.

That is a lovely pic. Sunsets are so fascinating, with the never-ending, hard-to-describe color changes in the clouds and sky. And they are so fleeting. In an instant, what was just before your eyes, is gone. This shot is from my cellphone (which takes decent pics, I think, though this isn't the best quality), from Swingbelly's July 19, 2011. You can make out the lighthouse shining our way. I like how the orange sky is reflected on the water.
