Roadside bomb found in LaPorte County

Joseph S. Pete

The LaPorte County Sheriff's Office called in the bomb squad after a homeowner found what appears to be a roadside bomb near the town of Trail Creek.

A resident found what appeared to be an IED, or improvised explosive device, on the side of Welnetz Road in LaPorte County Monday afternoon and brought the device back home, less than a block away. The bomb was out in the open and it was not immediately clear how it would have been detonated, Capt. Mike Kellems said.

The IED included pipe bombs filled with shrapnel like nails, gel in a jar and homemade fuses, Kellems said. Police are confident it was not a firework someone might have planned to set off for the Fourth of July holiday.

LaPorte County deputies summoned the Porter County Bomb Squad to a home on Longwood Drive near U.S. 20. Police evacuated the home and blocked off Longwood Drive between the highway and Welnetz Road as they worked to defuse the device.

Kellems said it was too early in the investigation to have a suspect or a motive.

"The fire department is out here, and we've cleared a pretty good radius," he said.

They had no idea what it was. If you saw the pics, you could see why. It was a couple of mason jars with some nasty swamp colored liquid in it.

They are suspecting some sort of a homemade napalm as what was used in this pipe bomb.

Napalm likely main ingredient in Michigan City bomb

Stan Maddux Times Correspondent

MICHIGAN CITY — Napalm, a substance widely used during the Vietnam War, is likely the main ingredient found by a woman along the roadside this week.

Napalm was more than likely the clear liquid inside two quart-sized mason jars attached by a wick, LaPorte County Police Capt. Mike Kellems said.

Kellems said the gel-like flammable substance ignites upon explosion and adheres to the skin. Trying to wipe it off only allows the substance to spread and increase the severity of the burns.

"We believe because of the way it appeared, the way the substance gelled, it may have been a homemade form of napalm,'' said Kellems, adding fuel and detergent mixed with Styrofoam that causes the material to gel are among the common ingredients of homemade napalm.

Detectives with the LaPorte County Sheriff's Office met Wednesday with members of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, who were given the remnants of the explosive device to analyze. The hope is to obtain any fingerprints that might be on the bomb or any other evidence that could help identify not only who made it, but where it was made, said Kellems.

Nora Schultz was out picking up litter Monday when she came across the device in a ditch on Welnetz Road. She called the police, who safely detonated the device in a nearby field.
