Final election post of the night (yes there may be more tomorrow... ) is an amazing statistic. That number is the total number of straight ballot tickets cast in the 2014 election. Typically this number is a HUGE advantage to the Democrats. This year it was only 377, which spelled doom to the D's in a lot of races that they lost handily, and in years past they won. In 2010 the difference was 1873.

2010 vs 2014 LaPorte Co Election stats:
Registered voters: 2014-80,497, 2010-76,763 Votes Cast: 2014-25,110, 2010- 29,512 Turnout: 2014-31.19% , 2010 38.45% Straight party ticket ballots cast: 2014- 5100, 2010- 6526 % of total votes cast vs Straight ballots: 2014-20.31% 2010-22.11% What I see in these numbers is that despite having nearly 4000 more registered voters, we had about 4400 LESS votes cast versus 2010. Turn out was down over 7 full percentage points, or just under 20% overall in terms of raw voter totals. Couple that with the 1400 straight ballot votes drop, and I think we are looking at a county that saw a whole lot of Democrats stay home for this election, as the straight party Republicans were almost unchanged from 2010, along with a lot of crossover votes that we didn't see in 2010. I would really like to hear from people who voted in 2010, but not in 2014 as to why they stayed home. |
