QUOTE Times staff MICHIGAN CITY | The Michigan City Police are investigating the shooting death late Friday of a 29-year-old man. At 11:14 p.m., police were dispatched to the 200 block of N. Calumet Avenue with the report of a person who had been shot. According to police, officers found Berry Williams, of Michigan City, lying on the ground unresponsive with a gunshot wound. LaPorte County EMS transported Williams to St. Anthony Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A forensic autopsy will be performed on the deceased on Monday morning at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, in Mishawaka, Ind., according to LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan. The Michigan City Police detective bureau and street crimes unit were summoned to the scene to assist in the investigation. Police ask anyone with information to contact lead investigator Sgt. 7 mins · On 8-15-14, at approximately 11:10pm members of the Michigan City Police Department were dispatched to the 200 Block of N. Calumet Avenue reference shots fired and a man down. Upon arriving at the scene officers of the uniform patrol division found the victim, Berry Williams, lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. Mr. Williams was transported by LaPorte County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to Franciscan Saint Anthony Memorial Hospital for treatment where he was later pronounced dead. Following the death of Mr. Williams, Detectives of the Michigan City Police Department, Laporte County Sheriff’s Department and Indiana State Police have dedicated an enormous amount of manpower and resources gathering evidence, developing leads and interviewing witnesses. As the case progressed during the past month, members of the Fugitive Apprehension Street Team (FAST) and Street Crimes Unit (SCU) were instrumental in developing additional leads and evidence to further this investigation. This ultimately led to the arrests of two individuals responsible for the death of Mr. Williams. On Sunday 9-21-14, Detective Sergeant Matthew Barr provided testimony to the Honorable Judge Kathleen Lang at which time probable cause was established to arrest both McSwain and Crume for the charge of murder. Johnny McSwain is charged with Murder and Conspiracy to Commit Murder. Larry Crume Jr is charged with Murder. The Michigan City Police Department would like to thank Chief Deputy Prosecutor Robert Neary and Superintendent Douglas Carter and the members of the Indiana State Police for all of their assistance during the course of this investigation.
