MICHIGAN CITY — The Michigan City High School Student Council wants to know who has talent and the public is invited to join in the search.

MCHS Student Council is bringing back a talent show, Michigan City’s Got Talent, set for 7 p.m. Friday, April 20 in the high school auditorium.

“This is the first talent show for the high school in years,” said Olyvia Dunn, president of the student council.

“It was my goal as president this year to bring back some older events that the high school used to sponsor.”

Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.Fifteen talented students made it through the audition phase back in March, Dunn said. This pool of performers was narrowed from 30 hopefuls who came out for the auditions.

“I don’t want to give to much of the show away, but there are a variety of acts that will be performed,” she said.

“We even have some surprise guests who will be getting on stage to entertain the crowd besides the students.

”While the show’s lineup is heavily vocal, Dunn said the students are diverse enough to ensure a wide range of vocal styles for the show.

Gospel, hard rock and today’s popular music are among the styles. Performers include a few solos, some duets, a band and singers who are accompanied by pianists.

A few of the more unusual talent performers includes a karate sequence and an exhibition by the ROTC drill team.

“It’s all very different,” Dunn said.Five judges will evaluate the performances using a point system. Criteria includes talent, stage presence, entertainment value and creativity. The first place winner earns $150 and second place nets $50.The Michigan City High School Thespian Society members will serve as masters of ceremonies for the evening. They will add a touch of their own talents to the event, by performing some improvisation comedy for the audience in between performances.Tickets for adults and students are $5 and children under the age of 5 are admitted free.

“The show is clean, edited and approved by a group of high school faculty members. This way the show will be something for the whole family to enjoy,” Dunn said.

Planning this event has meant a lot of work for the student council members. About 10 committees were formed to oversee portions of the program.

“I’m very proud of the student council for pulling together to make this show come to life, and I’m even more excited to share all of our hard work with our community,” Dunn said.
