Michigan City Area Schools are almost all online until October 1st day will be August 1st day will be 8/24.

Press release below:

Dear MCAS Families:

This evening, the Michigan City Area Schools Board of Trustees approved a proposal to begin our 2020-21 school year online. This means that all MCAS students (PreK-12) will participate in virtual learning until after Fall Break (returning October 19).

This decision was based on COVID spread in our community and region, and on feedback from staff and parents.

A few key items regarding this:

In addition to reopening school online, MCAS will have a new start date. The first day for students will be Monday, August 24. This extension will ensure that we begin the school year strong -- giving our district needed time for staff professional development, and to finalize logistics for device distribution, food service, and more.
All students -- both those who registered for Traditional instruction and those who selected MCAS Online -- will now participate in the MCAS Online program initially. All families will have an opportunity to review their placement in the online program as we prepare to re-enter school buildings in October.

The MCAS Online program is different from the eLearning that students experienced in the past. Students will be required to log on daily, during regular school hours. Instruction will be a combination of “live” and recorded lessons connecting students with teachers and their classmates. There will also be scheduled time away from computer activities, for students to complete assignments.

Some of our career-tech classes (including all classes at A. K. Smith and some at MCHS) require that students complete hands-on experiences in order to obtain technical certifications. If your student is enrolled in one of these classes and needs to report in person, you will be contacted with more information.

Extracurriculars during this period will mainly occur online, however high school athletics will proceed as planned, based on guidance from the IHSAA and our “Return to Play” plan.

School meals will be available for all MCAS students throughout this period of online learning. We will be sending you updates and information regarding school food service.

We understand that some parents may find the online program to be a hardship due to work commitments during the day. We are partnering with Safe Harbor, Boys & Girls Club, and the YMCA to provide supervised online learning for working families. We will share details about those options as soon as they are available.

A list of Frequently Asked Questions about the reopening is available on our website at http://educateMC.net/reopening and will be updated regularly.

If you have not already done so, I encourage you to register your child for school as soon as possible. Registration is extremely important, so we can ensure that your student is properly scheduled, that we have updated contact information for you, and that we know your tentative preference for learning when we return to school in October (traditional in-person instruction or online learning). Please log on to your Parent Access account to complete this essential step, and call your school if you need assistance.

Thank you for your continued support! Despite the challenges we face, I am excited about the MCAS Online program and I look forward to a strong start to our 2020-21 school year.

Sincerely,
Dr. Barbara Eason-Watkins
Superintendent
