QUOTE 3/23/2008 11:00:00 AM Elston To Reveal Art Project Monday From Staff Reports MICHIGAN CITY - Details of a public art project by Elston Middle School students will be announced Monday at the school. Students are participating in a project to create public art. With help from mentors and community members, they will design ceramic tiles for a sculpture. The students involved are from Hours for Ours and Club Discovery after-school programs. They are assisted by local artist Deborah Landry and will create 200 personalized ceramic tiles for a sculpture that will placed in front of Elston. Landry has been working with the students in a 10-week program in which she helped them create concept drawings and models, then select a design. The final design was inspired by combining all the students' concepts into one. The design - a wolf paw - was inspired by student Woody Lawson, and the "hand tiles" were a concept developed by the group of students. The sculpture is a visual representation of Elston's guiding principle of PAWS: practice respect, accept responsibility, work together, safety matters. The final sculpture will be completed by Landry in her studio. Welding students at the A.K. Smith Career Center will contribute to the sculpture's final stages. The project is part of an ongoing partnership between Michigan City Area Schools' extended-day service programs and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts. Funding is through the Unity Foundation of La Porte County. |

One of the things I miss most about Elston is walking in to see the old mural on the Detroit Street entrance. Does anyone have any idea whatever happened to it? Did they save it after the remodel, or destroy it?

Last I knew it was at Plant Planning and they wanted to figure out a way to incorporate into the Heritage Hall at MCHS. That may have been done by now.
