Sinai Forum Presented by Purdue North Central 2010 Season

Lisa Ling

The 57th season of the Purdue University North Central Sinai Forum will open on Sept. 12 at 3 p.m. at Elston Middle School, 317 Detroit St., in Michigan City. This season the forum departs from its format of the past with all programs beginning promptly at 3 p.m.

The 2010 Forum season features a line-up of timely and compelling speakers who will talk about subjects often overlooked by international news sources, stories of humble roots and meaningful success, a discussion about the country's tumultuous political environment, insights on what to do in this challenging investment climate and a look at the world-wide crisis facing everyone on earth – the food supply.

On Sept. 12, the Forum opens the 2010 season with “Lisa Ling on Assignment.” An internationally known television journalist, Ling has traveled the world pursuing news stories and providing in-depth coverage of the important stories that are too often ignored. From gang rape in the Congo, bride burning in India to her personal battle to free her sister who was held captive in North Korea; her talk promises to be as compelling as the events she covers. She has been a field correspondent for Oprah, a contributor to ABC News “Nightline” and National Geographic's “Explorer.” She co-wrote the book “Somewhere Inside: One Sister's Captivity in North Korea and The Other's Fight to Bring Her Home” with her sister Laura.

There will be a book signing following the program.

Bill Strickland

On Oct. 3, Bill Strickland will present “Make the Impossible Possible,” ponsored by the Duneland Health Council. As a child, he lived in a Pittsburgh ghetto; today he is considered one of the world's most innovative social enterprise thinkers. An entrepreneur, visionary and CEO of the nation's largest jazz subscription service, Strickland earned the MacArthur Foundation Genius Award, has lectured at Harvard's Graduate School of Education and is an National Endowment for the Arts board member. He will discuss how to build on passions and strengths, dream bigger and achieve meaningful success. In addition to his Sunday program, Strickland will visit the PNC campus on Oct. 4 to meet with students in their classrooms to discuss issues and answer questions.

There will be a book signing following the program.

The Oct. 24 program will feature Dr. Robert Schmuhl, speaking on the topic, “American Politics at the Breaking Point.” This noted political historian will provide his insight into the partisanship, polarization and paralysis in American politics. He'll also offer suggestions on what citizens can do to reduce the current discontent with government. A Notre Dame professor, Schmuhl is a long-time friend of the Forum. He has authored and edited 11 books.
