QUOTE MCAS superintendent search narrowed to 4 By Alicia Ebaugh Staff Writer Published: Tuesday, March 23, 2010 4:17 AM CDT MICHIGAN CITY — School board members are set to interview four finalists to become Michigan City Area Schools’ new superintendent, but their names are not yet being released. “When we get down to one or two, it will be up to the board on how we want to proceed,” said Jim Kintzele, board president. Some of the finalists did not want their names released because they already have jobs as superintendents in other school districts, he said. “It’s like any of us. We wouldn’t want our bosses to know if we were applying for another job,” Kintzele said. “We owe it to the people being considered at this point to keep it private. We feel we have the input we wanted from the search committee to go forward.” Kintzele would not say whether any of the candidates are already MCAS employees. “It wouldn’t be fair to the rest of them if we said either way,” he said. The board has previously discussed holding a public workshop or question and answer session with superintendent finalists. The four finalists were chosen from 38 applicants, selected by a search committee appointed by the board in September. The committee included PNC Chancellor James B. Dworkin; Paul Applegate, president of a Michigan City accounting firm; and Jaye Fuller, business manager for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 531 in La Porte. Kintzele said the board is still working on a date on which to conduct the interviews, but he hopes it will be soon. “With the property tax mess, we’ve got to have someone on board as soon as possible,” he said. The board hopes to hire a new superintendent before next school year. |
