Portion of U.S. 12 to periodically close

PORTER ­— Short-term closures of U.S. 12 at Ind. 49 will be conducted today through Thursday, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced.

Between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. each day, complete closures of U.S. 12 will occur, lasting 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

Crews will demolish the existing bridge structure on Ind. 49, and the road will be closed to prevent debris from falling onto passing cars. The short-term closures will be coordinated with South Shore schedules to avoid delays along the rail line.

The work is part of a project to build a section of the Dunes Kankakee Trail, a bike path that will extend from Lake Michigan to southern Porter County. The project is a collaboration between INDOT, the town of Porter, the Porter County Convention, Recreation and Visitors Commission, Indiana Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
