MICHIGAN CITY — A substitute teacher at Lake Hills Elementary School is under investigation, accused of punching a 10-year-old boy during a reading class, according to a Michigan City Police Department report.

The father of the student reported the incident to Michigan City police at 4:40 p.m. Friday, when an officer was dispatched to the student’s home. According to the report, the substitute teacher allegedly “punched” the student in the back of his head during a reading class at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The police report indicated that the substitute teacher is said to have called the student’s home Thursday evening to talk about the incident, about which she reportedly felt badly, as stated in the report. The report has been forwarded to Michigan City Police detectives for further investigation.

The accused is a long-term substitute teacher, said Betsy Kohn, director of communications for the Michigan City Area Schools.

The father also contacted the Lake Hills Elementary School principal and Michigan City Area Schools to report the incident.

“We just learned about (the report) this morning (Monday) and it would be premature to respond until we have completed an investigation,” Kohn said.

School system policy generally places an employee on paid suspension during an investigation, Kohn said.

MICHIGAN CITY | A substitute teacher in the Michigan City Area Schools Corporation has been suspended pending the outcome of an investigation alleging he threw a punch at a student.

Police are also involved after a report was filed Friday by the father of a 10-year-old student at Lake Hills Elementary.

The man told officers his son was punched on the back of the head Jan. 26 by the substitute teacher during a reading class.

The boy said the punch was thrown for no reason, according to police, who need to question his classmates and other potential witnesses before deciding whether to pursue charges.

He was not injured, police said.

"There are a lot more questions that have to be answered before it goes further," Michigan City Police Detective Bureau Commander Cary Brinkman said.

According to police, the teacher contacted the boy at home that evening to further discuss the alleged incident.

The name of the educator was not released.

"There's really no other information we can release at this time," Michigan City Police Chief Mark Swistek said.

Michigan City Schools spokesperson Betsy Kohn said the longtime substitute teacher has been suspended with pay pending the outcome of an investigation. The substitute teacher was filling in for a teacher who is on an extended leave and -- therefore -- under contract.

In November, another substitute teacher in the Michigan City Schools was accused by a 10-year-old girl at Pine Elementary with grabbing her arm leaving her with cuts and a bruise. Porter County Sheriff's Department said Tuesday that no charges were filed in that case because investigators found inconsistencies in witness accounts.

Kohn said, however, that substitute teacher was terminated.
