QUOTE New school coming to Pine Twp. Tuesday, May 22, 2007 12:45 AM CDT Post a Comment | Email this story | Print this story BY BOB KASARDA bkasarda@nwitimes.com 219.548.4345 MICHIGAN CITY | Officials with Michigan City Area Schools are pursuing plans to build a new elementary building in Pine Township. The new 85,000-square-foot school is planned for the Porter County side of County Line Road at County Road 1675 North, said Dave Williamson, director of plant planning for the school corporation. The $17 million school will replace a building half its size at 1594 North 500 East in Pine Township, he said. The existing school, which dates back to the 1940s, is being replaced because of its age and because it is not accessible enough to the disabled, Williamson said. The new building also will be capable of handing all-day kindergarten and more preschool students, he said. Pine Elementary School serves about 350 students from Pine Township and Beverly Shores in Porter County and from Michigan City and rural LaPorte County, Williamson said. The school district is in the process of buying 62 acres for the project, which has a projected completion date of August 2008. The project will be presented Friday to the Porter County Development Advisory Committee. |
