QUOTE Stan Maddux Times Correspondent MICHIGAN CITY | An 8-year-old boy was rescued from a sand hole Friday after a four-hour search on Michigan City's lakefront. Michigan City Fire Chief Ralph Martin said there were signs of life in the boy. ''They say he was in pretty good shape. Our prayers are going out to the family and the child," Martin said. Police and other emergency personnel were called about 4:30 p.m. to Mount Baldy, just west of the NIPSCO cooling tower off U.S. 12. Pictures of the scene displayed by various media outlets showed searchers with a backhoe inside a large sand hole where the boy was thought to be. Martin said it's believed the boy fell into the sand hole, which was at least 12 feet deep and was covered by sand that caved in from the sides. The name of the boy was not available Friday night. Emergency crews early in the search reportedly were able to see the top of the boy's head before more sand fell on top of him. Martin said before 8 p.m. the boy had not yet been located and his parents were still at the scene. Soon, the boy was located and taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City, where preparations were being made to transfer him to a Chicago-area hospital. Martin said the boy was finally located when searchers sticking probes into the sand kept hitting air pockets and then finally found an air pocket that contained the boy. Members of the media and public were being kept away from the scene by emergency responders blocking the entrances into Mount Baldy and the NIPSCO property, which leads to the search area. Martin said NIPSCO and local construction firms Woodruff and Sons and D & M Excavating helped by providing the machinery used in the search. The Red Cross was at the scene helping to provide food and water to searchers and family members. |

QUOTE WSBT-TV Report 10:50 p.m. EDT, July 12, 2013 MICHIGAN CITY – It's being called "a miracle." A 6-year-old boy, who was trapped in a huge sand hole near Mt. Baldy in Michigan City for more than 3 1/2 hours, is alive. That's the official confirmation from LaPorte County Coroner John Sullivan, who spoke with WSBT. The boy was originally reported as being 8-years-old, but park rangers corrected that late Friday night. Around 5:30 p.m. EDT Friday, the boy fell into the hole. Initial reports indicated the sand hole was about 8 feet deep, but now, we're learning the boy was found 34 feet below the surface. Michigan City police, fire and Department of Natural Resources dug with heavy equipment to rescue the youngster. The boy was taken away in an ambulance to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Michigan City, where he showed signs of life around 9:30 p.m. EDT. WSBT reporter Kelli Stopczynski says he was being airlifted to another hospital. WSBT has learned that during the early rescue attempt, emergency crews were able to see the top of the boy's head before more sand fell on top of the victim. Mt. Baldy Park will be closed the rest of the weekend. Park Ranger Bruce Rowe called it "unprecedented" and said he has never heard of a similar incident like this at Mt. Baldy. Rowe says the accident appears to have occurred in a restoration area that is blocked off from the public. In a news conference late Friday night, park rangers said they know the boy's family was visiting the area, and he is not from northwest Indiana. The sand is being put back into the hole where the boy was found. Photo courtesy of WLS-TV, Chicago. |

QUOTE MICHIGAN CITY -- Michigan City Fire Chief Ronnie Martin confirmed Saturday morning that an air pocket is what kept a 6-year-old boy alive after being trapped under a sand dune late Friday night. It happened near Mount Baldy at Lake Michigan around 4:30 p.m. He was trapped for over three hours and pulled out alive after being trapped under 11 feet of sand. And as WSBT's Kelli Stopczynski reports, there are still a lot of questions about how this could have happened. “This is unprecedented,” said park ranger Bruce Rowe. It happened so fast. |
