Request for Qualifications for US 421/South Franklin Street Corridor Plan

The Michigan City Redevelopment Commission hereby requests statements of qualification from firms or teams for planning, design, and public process services for a US Highway 421/South Franklin Street "South Gateway" Corridor Plan. The US 421/South Franklin Street "South Gateway" Corridor Study project seeks to set the vision for the desired future for the entire 3-mile north-south extent of the US 421/South Franklin Street corridor from Coolspring Avenue to County Road 300 North and along US Highway 20 from Ohio Street to Woodland Avenue in an effort to enhance the overall presentation, function and feel of the corridor, while focusing on the enhancement of key intersections.

They *bleeping* start can immediately by smoothing out the road surface on the US 421 overpass that spans I-94. It's horrible.

Looks like the bridge is going to be torn down and completely reconstructed beginning next spring. The is also going to be water and sewer extended out to the landfill.

I know let's put up a little mall. We can block off the road and call it "Franklin Square South." It cold not have been that the old Franklin Square was a bad idea, they just didn't do it right.

They need to find a way to have a sign on I-94 East say "Franklin Street." It's not a big deal, but the city should want the name of its main thoroughfare to be visible to help give them an identity. I'd prefer that to the "Michigan City" in block letters over the overpass ala what Valparaiso has done. Good start with adding Washington Park and Lake Michigan (although that is not specific to MC) but adding a sign that says "Franklin Street exit" and "Michigan Boulevard exit" at 40B would be ideal.
They do it in Hammond, Gary and Portage - why not us?
